And even if they did, chances are the cable companies would've found another reason to hike up the rates soon enough anyway. Do we really need the Oxygen Channel?!?!?! Back on topic, I personally cannot wait for the season to start. How great is it to see Yogi at Spring Training? It's gonna be a hell of a year :) You can reach me through AIM or email. Those four weren't there for AT LEAST half the year. Yankees are still the team to beat, but it will be by no means a cake-walk this year. Psychopath Registered: Oct. 00 | Let's Go Yankees!! But I've heard nothing is final about the YES network, last I heard is that they were still in negotiations with Cablevision, Time Warner, etc. because they want it as part of the "basic" cable package. Of course cablevision, most of all, doesn't want to do this because MSG is usually offered as a premium channel and if people subscribe to that channel just for the Yankees they won't have to because they'd already have YES. I could be wrong about all this but this is my Sports Law prof told us all this a couple weeks ago. I'm too lazy to make a sig. AIM

O&A Board Regular Registered: Feb. 01 | Look who's along for the ride in 2002!! Yankees bring back Jim Leyritz TAMPA, Fla. -- World Series heroes always have a special place in the hearts of the Yankees. Jim Leyritz, who hit a huge home run for the Bronx Bombers in the 1996 Fall Classic, was signed by New York on Tuesday to a minor-league contract. Leyritz, who has been working out at the Yankees' Tampa complex, has been invited to the team's Major League Spring Training camp. Last season, the 38-year-old batted .296 (21-for-71) with four home runs and 15 RBIs in 19 games for the Newark Bears of the independent Atlantic League. On June 1, he had his contract purchased by the San Diego Padres and was assigned to their Triple-A affiliate, the Portland Beavers, where he batted .261 (12-for-46) with five home runs and 10 RBIs in 16 games. Leyritz will compete for a utility spot with the Yankees, and may also have a shot at the backup catcher's role. "No promise ... no nothing," Leyritz said. "It's an opportunity. I want to come here and get a foot in the door. We'll see what happens." Leyritz's biggest Yankee moment came in Game 4 of the 1996 World Series, when his three-run home run in the eighth inning off Mark Wohlers tied the game 6-6, turning around the momentum of the series. The Yankees won that game to even the series, and took the next two games for their first championship since 1978. In all or parts of nine seasons with the Yankees, he has batted .263 with 58 homers and 252 RBIs in 577 games. For his big-league career, he is batting .264 with 90 home runs and 387 RBIs in 903 games with the Yankees, Anaheim Angels (1997), Texas Rangers (1997), Boston Red Sox (1998), San Diego Padres (1998-99) and Los Angeles Dodgers (2000). Leyritz originally signed with the Yankees as a non-drafted free agent on Aug. 24, 1985.

O&A Board Regular Registered: Jan. 01 | I don't think Leyritz will make the major league roster, at least not to start the season. He may get called up later in the year if someone goes on the DL for an extended period of time. The only chance he has to make the squad is as utility infielder/emergency 3rd catcher. Posada had shoulder surgery in the off-season so Torre will probably be very cautious with him. I used to post on OpieAnthony.com but I lost my bookmark and now I can't find the site. Psychopath Registered: Oct. 00 | I will love Giambi on April 1st, and for many years to come (I've actually liked him for a couple of years already)...but I will still miss the BamTino. And for those of you who feel the same, here's a little something from that piece of shit (NY Post) that was actually well written: Pried Off the Yankees -Tom Keegan February 21, 2002 -- JUPITER, Fla. - View the exit of Tino Martinez from the Yankees as one of his don't-go-down-easy at bats, one where he fouls off quality pitches before finally having to walk away from home. * Strike one: In the winter before the 2001 season, word leaks from a Jason Giambi pal that the slugger is fascinated with becoming a Yankee and will do so when he reaches free agency unless the A's are able to keep him. George Steinbrenner's obsession with Giambi grows while Tino struggles early in the 2001 season. * Strike two: The Yankees are the only ones with negotiating rights to Martinez in the 15 days after the final out of the World Series. They don't call him once. Still, Derek Jeter, Martinez's closest friend on the Yankees, instilled him with hope. Recounted Martinez: "We had talked and Derek said, ‘Don't worry. Don't worry. You ain't going nowhere.' " * Strike three: Derek Jeter plays host at his Tampa pad to Martinez and Jorge Posada for dinner, where the three of them watch a television report that states Giambi will become a Yankee the following day. "Him and I and Jorge were eating together and when they announced it on TV, they [Jeter and Posada] were like, ‘Oh man.' We were all kind of bummed," Martinez said. "We still thought maybe something could happen [until that moment]. . . . I think they were more bummed than I was." Martinez isn't bummed he's a Cardinal. He's just bummed he's not a Yankee anymore. "If I couldn't go back to New York, this was my top choice," Martinez said. "I'm happy to be here, seriously." He'll be more excited once he experiences the buzz of Busch Stadium. Martinez wore the Cardinals' red colors well yesterday as he took grounders and took his line-drive hacks. If he's bitter, he's keeping that to himself. The Yankees won four World Championships and missed a fifth by one inning during Tino's six years of carrying the baton passed him by Don Mattingly. Why won't there be a seventh? "It's pretty self-explanatory," Martinez said. "The Boss likes big-name players and those kind of guys. He wanted Giambi." During the Yankees' recruitment of Giambi, everyone from Yogi Berra to Joe Torre, Mike Mussina to Roger Clemens, placed a call to the 2000 AL MVP. Asked to do the same, Jeter declined. "I can totally understand that," Martinez said of Jeter's decision. "You know, you play with certain guys for years and you win. I wouldn't have done that. If [Scott] Brosius wanted to come back and they wanted me to call a third baseman, I wouldn't have done that. We've done so much as a team, I appreciate the fact Derek didn't call. I thought it was great. But I wouldn't have done it either. It's not like calling Mussina or someone like that if we needed an extra starter. In that case, you're not taking anybody's job. You're not trying to get rid of anybody." As for the two pitchers who did call Giambi, Martinez doesn't blame them. "I never helped Mussina win a championship," Martinez said, his remark punctuated by his signature laugh that opens a window to his down-to-earth nature. "Rocket, I don't know, you know how Rocket likes that run support." Before he called Giambi, Torre phoned Martinez. "Joe told me, ‘They've been on me to call Giambi and I haven't done it. They've been on me, on me, and I haven't felt comfortable doing it' " said Martinez, who is wearing No. 21 for the Cardinals. "I said, ‘Yeah I understand, no problem.' " Martinez struggled in his first month with the Yankees, in April of 1996, then he quickly won over the hearts of Yankee fans and never lost them. He replaced Mattingly then. He's replacing Mark McGwire now. "Both those guys retired," he said. "I didn't come and push anybody out. In New York, Mattingly had been there his whole career. That was more pressure than this." He handled the pressure and everything else in a way that made him a Yankee who'll never be forgotten.

So now Giambi gets to launch bombs on that short porch in right. Oh its gonna be awesome. Soriano + Jeter=All Star double play combo for years...Karsay's a big pickup, the outfield now has a shitload of depth, Jimmy "The King" Leyritz is back (again), and Donny Baseball is down in Florida showing everyone how God would hit a baseball. I can not f'n wait. One problem though.....DishNetwork, the other satellite system (which wants to buy DirectTV) is NOT negotiating with the YES network to carry Yankee games, which, uhhhhhhh sucks.
