O&A Board Regular Registered: Oct. 00 | How stupid are the Giants. This is a big mistake letting armstead go. ARMSTEAD HEADING SOUTH? By PAUL SCHWARTZ -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- February 27, 2002 -- There's a new head coach in Carolina named John Fox who knows what Jessie Armstead brings to a defense. There's a showy owner in Dallas named Jerry Jones who may be inclined to bring home a local hero to stick it to his old team. These are merely two of the possible locations for Jessie Armstead, who as early as today will be a former Giants linebacker. For the first time in his nine-year career, Armstead will hit the open market when the free agent signing period begins Friday morning. The Giants, his employer for every one of those nine years, believe the skills of the five-time Pro Bowler are in decline and, of more pressing concern, they cannot fit his $4.2 million salary (and $5.7 million salary cap allotment) into their $71.1 million budget. "We'll talk to some other teams with the idea we'll continue to stay in touch with the Giants," Drew Rosenhaus, Armstead's agent, told The Post yesterday. "Jessie's had hopefully a Hall of Fame career there and I think everyone will always remember him as a Giant, regardless of whether or not he goes somewhere else." Rosenhaus said he spoke with GM Ernie Accorsi early this week and that Accorsi all but confirmed what has been widely-speculated for quite some time. "Ernie will not make a decision by telling me - the Giants are much too classy for that," Rosenhaus said. "They want to tell Jessie via the head coach. But Ernie was very forthright that unfortunately, they're heading to the decision to release Jessie." Armstead did not return several messages left at his Dallas home, but Rosenhaus continues to maintain that his client, who can be quite emotional, understands the situation. "He has absolutely no hard feelings," Rosenhaus said. There will be offers for Armstead, but likely at modest prices. Fox was Armstead's defensive coordinator for the past five years and the two have a strong relationship, meaning Fox could import Armstead to provide leadership for a Panthers club coming off a 1-15 season. Armstead was a high school star in Dallas, and playing for the Cowboys would likely excite him. Having Armstead re-sign with the Giants for a vastly-reduced salary is a scenario some in the organization feel would create an unhealthy situation. Psychopath Registered: Dec. 00 | Since Jessie pretty much has to go, I'd much rather see him in a Panthers uni then a Cowgirls. Obviously the main reason cuz Dallas is in our division, also cuz he played his heart out under John Fox in the past, it'll be good to see him do it in the future. Psychopath Registered: Oct. 00 | He signed with Washington today, I love it when the sportswriters are so incredibly off with their stories. They got him for a song too, about 1.5 mil per year. The Giants really should have reworked his deal and tried to keep him.

O&A Board Regular Registered: Oct. 00 | fucking reporters. They might as well as said that he was about to retire, thats how accurate they are. This is not good for the Giants, seeing how the Redskins have a good young defense already. Imagine having Lavar Arrington and Jesse Armstead as your linebackers. We better get a good replacement for Armstead, like Sam Cowart. Go Knicks, Giants, Rangers, and Rutgers Men's Basketball (clinched NIT bid already, now shooting for NCAA bid) Long Live Psycho Bitch
