O&A Board Regular Registered: Jan. 01 | Well, you knew this was gonna happen. This guy should never have been named manager of the team last year. (Alhtough it was good for the Yanks... :)) Red Sox Fire Manager Joe Kerrigan Tue Mar 5, 6:34 PM ET FORT MYERS, Fla. (AP) - The Boston Red Sox fired manager Joe Kerrigan, Tuesday, replacing him with coach Mike Cubbage, team spokesman Kevin Shea said. Duquette promoted Kerrigan late last season after he fired Jimy Williams. Kerrigan's unofficial status was day to day under the new Red Sox ownership, which fired Duquette on Feb. 28, one day after closing the sale. Kerrigan had inquired about his status last weekend but was given no firm answer. Lucchino and interim GM Mike Port had regularly declined to offer Kerrigan support, which only fueled more speculation. Several players, including Johnny Damon, Derek Lowe and Nomar Garciaparra spoke in support of Kerrigan, who was credited for running an efficient camp under pressure. At the least, they said, management should make a quick decision so the team can focus on the season. The former pitching coach with no managerial experience inherited a team last year that was dysfunctional off the field but just two games back in the wild card hunt. Under their rookie manager the Red Sox went 17-26, including five straight wins in their last five games of the season against Tampa Bay and Baltimore. "This kind of decision is always difficult to make," Port said. "We have the utmost respect for Joe and admire his work ethic and his achievements as a pitching coach. John Henry, Tom Werner, Larry Lucchino, and I have discussed this decision at great length, and we firmly believe that this action is in the long-term best interest of this franchise." Cubbage, 51, the Red Sox third base coach, played nine seasons in the majors, finishing in 1981 with the New York Mets. He was a career .258 hitter. he also played with Texas and Minnesota. Cubbage managed seven games for the New York Mets in 1991. I used to post on OpieAnthony.com but I lost my bookmark and now I can't find the site. Hanger-On Registered: Feb. 02 | The reason for the down fall last year was not because of Joe Kerrigan as manager, it was because Jimy Williams was let go. I know that doesnt make much sense but it is true. Your man Joe Torre would have failed as well under those circumstances as well. The team was on the down fall and the removal of Jimy Williams took away what little stability there was. Anyone who knows anything about Kerrigan also knows that his approach to baseball is one of those most knowledgable in the game. His ST camp has been running very smoothly and players where actually speaking out to keep him. This is the first bone head move of many to come from this new ownership. If they replaced Kerrigan with a coach with experience, I would be happy. This guy they fired is nothing but a third base coach with not much coaching history. This is a move that benefits you people.

Psychopath Registered: May. 01 | I hate the Red Sox but this was a good move on their part. Kerrigan does not have the makeup to be a manager. When he came in he made all kinds of promises that he didn't keep such as a set lineup for each game. He then went and had a different one in every single game. They weren't going to keep him around long anyway so might as well shit can him now. Don't worry Sox fans, Cubbage won't be there long, they will get a "big name" in there in no time. Since it's spring training and they actually need an interim guy they just threw it on Cubbage. Would have been a whole lot cooler if they gave the job to the Steemer though. Now, they just need to get rid of that Port guy and the Sox can actually be ready to contend. ------------------- But there's also this: there are over 5,000 men in this city, who know that being a policeman is an endless, glamourless, thankless job that's gotta be done. I know it, too, and I'm damn glad to be one of them."

Hanger-On Registered: Feb. 02 | Feel sorry for us? Please dont, the last thing I need is sympathy from a Mets Fan. You may have 1986, that can never change. The thing is, at least in Boston we know we could take rest in knowing we are the PRIDE of our city. We are a piece of history that was a force that built the game we LOVE. The last thing I want to be is a fan of an expansion team in a City they will never truelly have the hearts of. You will always play second fiddle to the Yankees. You will never have many TRUE fans, as most have become Yankee fans during 1996 to date. The Yankees I will take abuse from, you Mets fans....I am the one who feels sorry for YOU.

Hanger-On Registered: Jan. 70 | Blah blah blah, who's got better fans? Interesting? Next! Anyway, the reason for the Sox downfall wasn't Duquette, Cancer Everett's attitude, that made up stupid fucking curse, Jimy's lineups, Jimy getting fired, or Kerrigan getting hired. The reason the Sox died at the end of the year was becuase they didn't have: Pedro for over 1/2 of the season Nomar for over 3/4 of the season Manny for over 1/4 of the season Varitek for over 1/2 of the season Everett for over 1/2 of the season (and was injured the rest) That's 4 all-stars (including the perennial Cy Young favorite and two perennial MVP canidates) and the third-best catcher in the AL that were gone for the vast majority of the season. How far would the Yankees have gone without Jeter, Posada, Mussina, and Bernie Williams for the majority of the year? New Poster with a question? AIM me

The New York Metro area is so mixed of Yankee and Met fans, but you wouldn't know that. Since 1996 the Yankees have picked up so many frontrunning fans who wouldn't know if Steve Balboni, Tim Leary, Jessie Barfield or Mel Hall tripped over them. I do dislike Yankee fans but I respect the ones that have been there through the shitty years. You mentioned 1986 but forgot to mention 1969, don't worry you'll get 'em next time chief. They sucked for years and now have WS potential every year. Going through the list of mediocre to shitty 1990's Mets players is 2 depressing for me to do.

O&A Board Regular Registered: Jul. 00 | The depressing thing about the 90's Mets teams was that the majority of players they traded for/signed were All Stars before becomming a Met: Juan Samuel, Frank Viola, Carlos Baerga, Vince Coleman, Bret Saberhagen, Bobby Bonilla, Eddie Murray, etc. Sorry, had to do it :D But yeah, they've got WS potential now, and that's all that matters now.
