VOORHEES, N.J. -- Ken Hitchcock, who led the Dallas Stars to a Stanley Cup championship in 1999, was hired to coach the Philadelphia Flyers on Tuesday.
The hiring will be announced by the team at an 11:30 a.m. ET news conference.
Hitchcock, who served as an assistant coach in Philadelphia from 1990-93, was fired by the Stars in January. He met with Flyers general manager Bob Clarke and team chairman Ed Snider on Monday, and continued his interview Tuesday.
Hitchcock, 50, replaces Bill Barber, fired two weeks ago after the Flyers were eliminated in the first round of the playoffs for the fourth time in five years.
He is the fifth coach hired by Clarke since 1997, when Terry Murray was fired despite leading Philadelphia to the Stanley Cup finals.
A demanding coach whose philosophy centers on defense, Hitchcock said Monday there are many similarities between the Flyers and the Stars.
"I see a desperation here to want to win," he said. "I see that in the veteran players by the comments and by the few conversations that I've had with the players I've come across. When I went in Dallas in '97, that was what I saw. They were willing to do anything to win and that was a good feeling."
Barber was let go four days after the Flyers scored a record-low two goals in five games against the Ottawa Senators. The NHL's coach of the year last season, Barber failed to take the team past the first round two straight years.
Hitchcock interviewed with the New York Rangers last month, before he went to Europe to serve as an assistant coach for Team Canada in the World Championships. But the Rangers are reportedly seeking former U.S. Olympic coach Herb Brooks.
Washington, which fired Ron Wilson last Friday, wanted to interview Hitchcock, and Dallas owner Tom Hicks at one time planned to offer him his old job.
After leaving the Flyers, Hitchcock coached Kalamazoo, Dallas' minor-league affiliate, from 1993-96.
He took over as the Stars coach midway through the 1995-96 season, led Dallas to two Stanley Cup finals appearances -- winning the title in 1999 and going back the next year -- and five straight division titles.
Hitchcock has a 277-160-60-6 record in the regular season, and is 47-33 in the playoffs. He was the first candidate interviewed by the Flyers.
The Stars were 23-17-6-4 when Hitchcock was fired Jan. 25, but didn't make the playoffs for the first time since the 1995-96 season.

| man, I don't know about the Flyers anymore. The
players through Billy Barber under the truck after
an awful playoff performance. Now we have Ken
Hitchcock, the sixth coach in six years.
Hitchcock is the first Philly coach to be hired
with a championship ring as a head coach. He's a
tough guy and won't take crap from the crybaby
players like Recchi, Primeau, and Boucher. I
should be happy with this movie, and I am, kind
of.
The Flyers real problem appears to be Bobby
Clarke, it also appears that as long as Ed "Mr."
Snyder is in charge, Clarke is an untouchable. I
hope that Ken Hitchcock is Clarke's last chance at
winning. If Barber was not his guy, fine, but
Hitchcock is his "first choice", he said that a
few times. If Hitchcock follows in his
predesessors' footsteps and is gone in a year or
two, Clarke has to go with him. This is the last
straw for me as a fan. I swear, being a Flyers fan
is like being a battered wife. Husband Clarkie
keeps on saying he'll change and it will get
better, but it never does, I know it never does,
and like an idiot, I keep
"Somebody took my phone number and called Afghanistan. Afghanistan! I've never talked to anyone in Afghanistan, I don't know nobody in Afghanistan, and even if did know anyone, I wouldn't talk to that Afghan ass for three hours! I won't talk to my daddy for three hours." |

| Now we'll see if this team is as talented as everybody thinks it is. I don't think it is but I hope I'm wrong.
ps. Scrappleking: Why do your posts seem to be cut short all the time?

Hitchcock is a good coach; I was hoping he'd land in NY. However, rumors abound about his ability to deal with Star players. We'll see how he deals with Roenick. I kinda see him now as high risk, high reward.
I guess this also means Pavel Brendl never sees the light of day on Broad Street; Hitchcock will never put up with his crap.

| Damn it,
I really think Hitchcock could have helped out that shitty D in NY. Oh well, Pat Burns is still up, he's not as good as Hitch but he is a respectable coach...

| Figures that Hitchcock was available, and the Rangers had more time than the Flyers to get him, and of course, they dont. Sather is the biggest assclown ive ever seen. Get off your ass and do something about the coaching situation.

| Its typical Rangers. Had plenty of time to get Hitchcock, and they don't even try to get him. I'd like to see the Rangers get Ted Nolan, but Sather will chicken out and get some jabroni.

| I'm happy with the Flyers' choice. Like Scrappleking said, he's the type that won't take shit from whiny players, and that's always good. I'd be much happier if they would fire Clarke, though. I hate to say it, but I don't really think things will get better here until he's gone.
