PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. (AP) -- With no chance Jim Leyritz would make the team, the New York Mets released the postseason star on Saturday.

``I've seen a lot or organizations wait,'' Leyritz said. ``I was happy they gave me a chance to show I was healthy. Obviously this wasn't a personal thing, it was a numbers thing.''

Leyritz, who can catch, play first or be a designated hitter, missed the end of last season with Los Angeles because of a torn rotator cuff in his right shoulder.

He was hitting .130 this spring with no extra-base hits.

Leyritz is best remembered for his three-run homer off Mark Wohlers in Game 4 of the 1996 World Series. He also hit three homers for San Diego against Houston in the 1998 division series.

``With that kind of guy you want to make sure you treat him the right way,'' Mets general manager Steve Phillips.

I read that today and it was good of Leyritz to
give the MET management a kind word and not be sore. I didn`t figure he`d have a shot unless Pratt or Ventura got hurt. But with Joe Mcewing able to play those same positions plus a few more, the utility spot is pretty much locked up for him.
Good Luck to Leyritz though, CLASS ACT!!

I happen to like Jim Leyritz. He comes through in tough situations. I don't see why the Yanks can't dish out a couple of bucks a year and have him as a bench warmer and put him as a pinch hitter once in a while.

Hey look. I finally learned how to use the EDIT button!!!

As a Yankee fan I like the King also, and he showed a lot of class. It's just hard to find a team that can use him, at this point in his career. He'll find a spot somewhere.

It's the same situation that they had with Charlie Hayes last year during spring training. He's an aging veteran who will be mediocre at best. He brings experience, but he's not going to play unless several people get injured.
