| Mets May Face Fine for Clemens Incident
http://www.nytimes.com/2002/06/18/s...all/
18SHEA.html
Bob Watson, baseball's vice president for
discipline, said yesterday that he would
probably discipline the Mets for throwing
behind the Yankees' Roger Clemens on
Saturday.
Watson said he would most likely announce
fines in a day or two "on the part of everybody
involved" on the Mets. He said he was not
considering suspensions.
Clemens pitched at Shea Stadium on
Saturday for the first time since he hit Mike
Piazza in the head with a pitch in 2000. He
also threw a shattered bat toward Piazza
during that season's World Series. Because
National League rules require pitchers to bat,
there was intense speculation before the
game about whether the Mets would retaliate.
Shawn Estes threw an 87-mile-an-hour
fastball several inches behind Clemens's
upper thigh on the first pitch of Clemens's first
at-bat in the third inning. Clemens leaned
back, smirked at Estes and touched the bill of
his helmet. Both teams were warned and
Clemens eventually struck out on a called
third strike.
Estes later smiled when he said that the first
pitch to Clemens had missed its mark,
without saying where he had intended to
throw it.
The Mets considered throwing at Clemens
when he batted for the second time, in the
sixth inning, but did not do so when Piazza
declined to endorse the tactic. Clemens hit a
double and was stranded at third.
Watson and Ralph Nelson, baseball's vice
president for umpiring, decided last week not
to warn both teams about throwing at batters
before the game, allowing the umpires to
handle the situation. This essentially gave the
Mets a free shot before they were warned.

| Shows how impartial that scumbag Watson is.
How can you fine a team over this. Technically, he never hit Clemens, so nothing happened. The comments made after the game were no big deal either.
Thanks to Austin for the pic

| This is ludicrous. The whole thing was hype. The Yankees should be fined for failing to play well that game.

| For once we agree - I think they have no
business getting involved in these matters -
the players can handle it on the field.

are you kidding? you don't pay attention much
do you? He is so bitter at the yankees, he has
sent some of the yankees letters about how
they wear their pants, warning of fines (giambi
for example) but gee manny ramirez or barry
bonds doesn't get one..hmm..
The fact that they even looked into fining
clemens for the bonds incident is absurd.
Because some AP asshole decided to take a
clemens-bonds college anctidote and add
words and make it sound like he said he was
going to hit him, doesn't even deserve a
second thought. Jesus, that pitch was almost
a strike.

| How come no one was calling Armando Benitez out to hit after he drilled Tino when he was on the Orioles? Oh and I'm still waiting for Glendon Rusch to hit also bec he drilled Tino in retaliation the next inning after Piazza was drilled.
[Sarcasm]but of course only the mets are the poor victims [/Sarcasm]

| This is a non-story.
I don't mean you shouldn't have posted this - it is in the paper, I mean that fines today are so trivial as to be inconsequential. This is the kind of thing Congress does - they make a fancy resolution saying "doing bad things is bad".
Watson wants to pretend that he is enforcing something. It is even possible that the Yankees complained that they were fined in the past, so Mets should now.
I agree it should be dealt with on the field - it wasn't anything outrageous (like the Bert Campanaris bat throwing).
Hopefully this is the last thing we ever hear about this incident.
2002 Crack Committee Objectives: (modified version)(You gotta try and believe....)
1.Hate the Braves with PASSION and extreme prejudice
1a. Try and go a week without having to punch a wall in frustration after watching the Mets play
2. 90 Wins and somehow get the Mets into playoffs this year
3. All 5 Starters have winning records this year
3a.Have team understand it is OK to get a hit with runners on base.
4. Mets win World Series (after divine intervention) |

| Fine is appropriate. $750 to a mlb ballplayer is like throwing a penny in a fountain to the rest of us.

True, but its not the money, its the principle. They should just let the issue die.

| This is just plain stupid. Everyone knew what was going to happen. Some people were surprised that Estes didn't actually hit Clemens. It may have been for the better. There could have been a very ugly situation if Clemens did get hit by the pitch. A 90+ mph fastball as a retaliation for a retaliation could have gotten way out of hand.
BTW, not being much of a baseball fan, I heard the story about what Clemens said about Bonds, about introducing himself to the plastic piece that Bonds wears on his arm. Clemens hit Bonds. Was there any action taken, or did Clemens get off free? Because if there was no action taken in that case, I don't think any action should be taken in this case.

This is the proble. you didn't see what
clemens said. You said the version
manipulated by the AP. He said two seperate
things:
1 "That he wanted to introduce himself real
quick. [to bonds]."
2 the in a seperate sentance later he said "
That big piece of plastic - we have to get barry
to take that off and even things out a little."
the AP retard did this - Clemens "wanted to
introduce himself real quick" to "That big piece
of plastic"
notice how that 'to' is outside the quotes?
because roger didn't say it! Its all about selling
papers.

| This is just bullshit. Getting fined for attempting to hit a player.
I've been a Mets fan my hole life, and they cant DO ANYTHING RIGHT, EEVVEEEEERRRRRRR. Since they got fined anyway Estes should have beaned Clemons rite in his fucking face (no just a shot to his leg woula been fine to get the point across). Its protecting his teamates and about every other player in the league that peice of shit Clemons has always been a headhunter. The thing is Shawn Estes has a little something called Class, something Clemons and basically the entire Yankees organization have never had.
