How did I beat DarthZiggy to this one?
Clark Gillies, Roger Neilson, Rod Langway, & Bernie Federko were elected to the Hockey Hall of fame. '02 class: Neilson, Langway, Gillies, Federko

Maybe it's me, but I think this is a weak class. Gillies for example was no where near the player that Trottier & Bossy. Very good player, tough as all hell, but HOF?

Federko was a pretty good offensive player but I never thought of him as top 5 in the league.

Langway was a true stay at home defenseman who always killed the Rangers when he was with the Capitals; of course with he played alongside Larry Robinson for one of the top pairings.

Neilson was a survivor (no pun intended) - a good coach, but did any of you really think he would be in the HOF?

2002 Crack Committee Objectives: (modified version)(You gotta try and believe....)
1.Hate the Braves with PASSION and extreme prejudice
1a. Try and go a week without having to punch a wall in frustration after watching the Mets play
2. 90 Wins and somehow get the Mets into playoffs this year
3. All 5 Starters have winning records this year
3a.Have team understand it is OK to get a hit with runners on base.
4. Mets win World Series (after divine intervention)

I'm very happy that Gillies is going to the Hall. He may not have been as superb a star as some others, but he was a solid player, protected his teammates, was the team captain for a few years, and got over 300 goals in his career. Damn good player, and it's a great honor.
Langway - I ALWAYS hated him! But probably cuz he was so damn good and always seemed to shut down the Isles as well as the Rangers, so I'm sure it's a well-deserved honor for him as well. Neilson is deserving of the selection as well, and Federko I never saw play, so I couldn't really tell ya.
And I don't mean to sound too harsh here, but a big reason for Neilson's being chosen is probably his cancer. He's coached 1000 games, has a pretty good record from what I know, but he is in no way an outstanding coach. That's just me though, I dunno

Long live the Gonzo sigs! Thanks Amy!

Today's newsday article said that Al Arbour, Emile Francis & John Davidson, who are among the 18 member selection committee(Davidson??) "saluted the backbone and leadership skills with which Gillies helped the Islanders win 4 straight cups. I don't dispute that he was a tough competitor, both in terms of grit and fists, but how can you determine what he would have done with other line mates?

Yeah, I think Neilson's election was helped by his cancer, but he is also what baseball terms "a compiler". He coached 1,000 games, but he only had a .540 winning percentage, .481 in the playoffs. He was elected as a "builder", for his video usage, but I don't know it is a HOF thing.

The only one who deserves it is Langway. The rest just show that all Hall of Fames are being watered down just to get people in. No way in hell is Gillies aHall of Famer and Neilson was a slightly above average coach. The other guy I don't know.
