NEW YORK -- As baseball prepared to resume labor negotiations following an All-Star break dominated by talk of strike, steroids and stalemate, commissioner Bud Selig claimed a team may not be able to make payroll Monday.

Selig made the comment during an interview Wednesday in Milwaukee with the Houston Chronicle and other papers, saying during the session that a second team had so much debt that it might not finish the season.

Selig did not identify the teams he was referring to, and there was no way to corroborate his claims.

The Houston Chronicle reported in Thursday's editions that Selig might have arranged to keep the Arizona Diamondbacks and Tampa Bay Devil Rays alive financially this past winter, according to its industry sources. The commissioner didn't name which teams are in financial trouble, but said one of them "will surprise you," according to the paper.

Reached at his home Wednesday night, Selig refused to discuss the subject.

"I'm done. Major league baseball's credit lines are at the maximum,'' Selig was quoted as saying in the Chronicle. "We've done everything we can to help people by arranging credit lines. Frankly, at this point in time, we don't have that luxury anymore.

"If a club can't make it, I have to let 'em go. I'm a traditionalist, and I hate all that. It pains me to do it. I just don't have any more alternatives.''

The talks are to resume Thursday.

Players and owners have not held a full negotiating session since June 27, and are far apart on all the key issues: increase revenue sharing among teams, the owners' proposal for a luxury tax to slow payroll growth, random testing for steroids and other drugs, extending the amateur draft world wide, and management's attempt to change salary arbitration rules and eligibility.

On Monday, the union's executive board met in a Chicago suburb. While the board did not set a strike date then, it asked players on individual teams to give it authority to set one. If there is no progress in negotiations, the executive board is expected to call for baseball's ninth work stoppage, setting a walkout date for August or September.

Players and owners also await the upcoming ruling from arbitrator Shyam Das, who heard the grievance filed by the union, which claims management's attempt to fold the Minnesota Twins and Montreal Expos violated the previous labor contract, which expired Nov. 7.

Das has told the sides he will attempt to have a decision by Monday. Contraction was put off by Selig until after the 2002 season following a string of legal losses by baseball in the Minnesota courts, which ruled the Twins had to honor their 2002 lease in the Metrodome.

They've been in finanical ruin since their inception.

(and no it wont be the Mets! They earn a lot a revenue. Only the Yankees and the Red Sox make more)

Actually I don't think so. This was in the Chicago Tribune:

quote:

According to a highly placed Major League Baseball source, the Tampa Bay Devil Rays are one of two teams experiencing severe cash-flow problems. But it is the other team, which the source did not identify, that is trying to solve an imminent crisis.

If the Mets are contracted maybe the Yankees can bring in Al Leiter for long relief and Mike Piazza as a parttime DH with Nick JOhnson and spot reliever at catcher for Posada. Or we can just let Piazza catch everytime Clemens pitches:-D

Piazza and Posada. Now THERE goes the single worst defensive platoon at catcher in the history of the sport. One guy can't throw out runners at 2nd if he had a cannon with him and the other guy has more pass balls than Richard Simmons (HAHA! Get it? Balls ... pass ... Simmons is gay? ... AH, fuck it, that was a terrible joke. You get my point, though). Not too bad of an offensive platoon, though.

Seriously, both of them need a defensive position change yesterday. Posada really needs to get out of there while he's still young cuz he's not exactly Pudge back there, so no reason to keep him there if it's gonna hurt his offense. HEY, maybe the Yankees can sign Pudge in the offseason and move Posada to left and get rid of Rondell White for Randy Johnson and Curt Schilling!!! Ah shit, I just gave Steinbrenner and Cashman the idea.

Oh, and I think Selig's statement is what is called "calling a bluff to impact negotiations." I doubt the players are stupid enough to fall for it. I'm sorta with Bud on this quest for competitive balance, but this is rather transparent.

Riiiight. I'll believe it when I see it. I'd bet the farm that it's just another wonderful negotiating ploy by the scholar Bud Selig.

I heard on SportsCenter this morning that he said "some team won't make payroll this monday"... What kind of person would make a statement like that without going into specifics? Why would he even mention it unless he was ready to mention specifics? I'm starting to think Selig isn't the man the MLB needs to run the league.

[sarcasm]STARTING to think?[/sarcasm]

I find it unfucking believeable that the D-Backs are world champs, sell out 40 percent of their games, HAVE A BRAND NEW FACILITY, and can't make payroll.

Selig says that baseball was 322 million in the hole last year. Forbes magazine said baseball MADE 75 million last year.

Who are you going to believe? The man who loves baseball so much he cancelled the World Series or a magazine that KNOWS financial reports?

Face it, if baseball strikes, a scandal will be uncovered that'll make Enron look like a flesh wound.

The problems with baseball started to snowball out of control when the owners pulled a coup and ousted Fay Vincent from the commisioner's office and planted one of their own in his place. I say baseball deserves all the bad publicity they get and if a couple teams have to fold then so be it. I won't miss them one bit.

This is exactly what baseball needs. Get rid of teams like these deadbeats who dont pay money for their teams, and take those players and spread them out to other teams willing to play the game. Quality will go up, income will go up, fan interest will go up in the cities like Kansas City. Im not talking about eliminating KC, im talking about teams who might have some money and dont use it right, like the Tigers, Devil Rays, etc.

I can't believe that it could actually be the D'Backs! Proof that Arizona isn't a sporting state. If it's the Devil Rays I won't be surprised, I wonder if the Mets would sign another shitty player in Greg Vaughn??

I have to wonder if it could be my beloved Orioles. They're still paying a high percentage on contracts of players that are gone for one reason or another, and they've been mediocre for two or three years causing their attendance to plummet. Thoughts from those who know better?

The Yankees don't like catchers of Piazza's proclivity.

Doubt it, as Peter Angelos and Selig are best of friends. A big part of the reason why Selig is against a team moving to Washington is because it might cut into the Orioles' market, and therefore, Angelos' wallet. I can't see the O's going out of business when Selig has gone out of his way to protect them.

Of course, there is the issue of the enormous tax write off Angelos would get. So you never know...
