O&A Board Veteran Registered: Feb. 01 | TAMPA, Fla. (AP) -- Chuck Knoblauch walked out of Legends Field on Monday carrying a box of media guides, which he said were for his mother. ``Have to scratch off the 2B,'' he joked. ``It's 2B not to be.'' Knoblauch's career as a second baseman may be over. After watching him make more wild throws this spring, the Yankees said Monday they will experiment switching Knoblauch to left field. The former Gold Glove infielder talked the matter over with New York manager Joe Torre, who said he didn't want Knoblauch to think left field was ``the penalty box.'' ``I would say, and he will agree, I've done every possible thing I can do,'' Knoblauch said in a corridor outside the Yankees' clubhouse. ``The word 'quit' is not in my vocabulary. ``It's just not happening now. I've done every possible thing. My teammates know that. Joe Torre knows that. The coaches know that. And more important, I know that.'' Knoblauch developed throwing problems in 1999, making 26 errors during the regular season. By June 28 last year, he had made 15 more, most on throws. He played second base just 30 times after that, sidelined by arm pain and becoming a designated hitter much of the time when he returned. Knoblauch spoke with a psychologist during the offseason and reported to spring training more than a month early, on Jan. 15, trying to rediscover his arm's accuracy. But he made six errors in 14 spring training games, five on throws. ``He needs to be comfortable for me to be comfortable, and we're not there yet,'' Torre said. ``Nobody has worked harder than he has. There is nothing more he can do at second base that is going to make him a better second baseman. Maybe getting away from second base will solve second base.'' The move, which calls for Alfonso Soriano to take over at second, won't take place immediately. Monday night's game against Detroit was washed out and more rain was forecast for Tuesday, when the Yankees play a Houston split squad. If Knoblauch wants to get in a day of fielding practice and advice from outfield coach Lee Mazzilli, he might not play left on Wednesday. But the move will be made sooner than later. ``It's a lot less stressful here in March than if you do it in June,'' Torre said. At least three times, Torre mentioned that he didn't want to hurt Knoblauch's psyche. Knoblauch, who won a Gold Glove at second in 1997 with Minnesota, seemed in a good frame of mind. At first, he didn't want to talk about the switch. But after some prodding, he opened up and even joked about it, saying his new outfield glove was en route by overnight mail. Knoblauch played center field for Texas A&M as a freshman in 1987 but has played outfielder just once in the major leagues, for Minnesota in September 1993. No one has been able to come up with an explanation for Knoblauch's malady. He criticized television commentators who tried to judge his problem, saying only Steve Sax, who also developed throwing problems at second, could know what he felt. ``It's not baseball. Who knows what it is?'' he said. ``It might not have anything to do with me as a baseball player.'' He compared it to trying to figure out why his father has Alzheimer's disease. ``My dad is sick. My dad is in a bed in Houston not knowing what's going on,'' he said. Through the tough times, his teammates have noticed the stress. ``I'll guarantee his offensive numbers are going to go up,'' said Tino Martinez, whose defense at first base has saved Knoblauch from even more errors. ``He's not going to give up,'' Bernie Williams said. ``I think he's going to be able to make the adjustment. He's a good athlete.'' Moving Knoblauch to left field would appear to leave Shane Spencer without a spot when his right knee heals from knee surgery last July. It also figures to reduce to the playing time of Henry Rodriguez, who signed with the Yankees as a free agent. In winning the last three World Series, the Yankees' offense has functioned best with Knoblauch leading off and Derek Jeter hitting second. ``He's been an important part of the club, and that's not going to change,'' Williams said. Jeter, the Yankees' shortstop, said Knoblauch was more adjustable than he is. ``I can't judge fly balls,'' Jeter said. ~Matt/Froy from Jersey Official Protector of Gay Marco & SwampJunk...if he ever decides to post. O&A Board Regular Registered: Dec. 00 | You cant hide a player at a position. This isnt Little League where you put the scrub in the Outfield. If he cant throw the ball 10 feet to the First Baseman, how is he going to make relay throws? And he may of played Left Field before a long time ago, I doubt that means he will become a Stellar Left Fielder. this has Todd Hundley written all over it. So then what are they going to do with Henry Rodriguez and Shane Spencer? Assuming you DH David Justice.

We'll see, but perhaps the sight of a huge target, albeit imaginary, will be better for him. By this I mean the open space from wherever in field to the cut-off. The bottom line is , the Yanks have that much more athleticism on the field for defensive purposes. And, we all know that Soriano has great talent. It's wait and see, but I don't see Soriano as the next Ruben Rivera... I, for one, applaud this experiment Jeder oder Keiner, Alles oder Nichts This message was edited by Rommel on 3-20-01 @ 9:50 AM

They have Chuck -the fuck- Knob-hobber, Henry Rodriguez, Dave justice, Glen Allen Hill, and Shane Spencer if he gets healthy. I know he's a great lead-off guy, but what the hell do they need a 5th leftfielder for? Trade his mental ass. And what's with this "mental" problem? JUST THROW THE FUCKING BALL!You God damn midget fucker, waste of space, blowing bubbles pointing at a live ball, ass-f, cock sucker, bloody rectum licking, Shit ball! FUCK YOU CHUCK!

O&A Board Regular Registered: Jan. 01 | I don't care what you say about his fielding... Chuck is one of the best lead-off guys in the game. This way, he's still in the lineup, he's less of a defensive liability, and the old tired DH's don't have to play the field. Who gives a flying monkey about Shane Spencer.. he hasn't done anything mentionable since his late season homer streak two years ago. Chuck was a golden glover.... he's done more good for that team than bad, cut him some slack. Adopted Dilloner in training: Toadie (w/room still for another)AIM CHRIS052076

He is going through a tough time emotionally, his father is sick, and from what I understand he is going through a divorce. When you are having problems in your personal life it does affect your work...it happens to everybody, and I am sure getting beat up in the press doesn't make him feel any better. Chuck is one of the best lead off hitters out there, and has the ability to be a great second baseman... And Jewdown...please be nice to my Chucky I happen to like him :) My new daddy told me to run away, and my old daddy won't be my daddy until the DNA test results come back...someone please adopt me :)

Psychopath Registered: Mar. 01 | Maybe all you assholes who are talkin shit should get a clue...Henry Rodriguez, Justice, and GA Hill would never make it through a season playin in left, Spencer hasnt shown anything since the Roy Hobbes comparisons wore off and noone knows when hell be healthy enough to play...theres a big difference between makin a throw from 20 feet away and makin a throw from any distance that youve been having trouble with, its like a scab, you keep pickin at it and it keeps gettin worse and worse and jewdown...if it was that easy to be a Major League second basemen, dont you think more of us would do it PS-just because your a Mets fan whose team only won because some tool from boston couldnt field a lazy grounder, doesnt mean you HAVE to hate the Yanks, maybe if your squad spent more time worryin about the Braves then about competin with the yankees over the back page of the daily news, you couldve given them a run last october

I just said he should just Throw the fucking ball! And if he can't throw the ball 20 fucking feet, what makes you think he could throw it 200?! As far as your little "PS" is concerned, I hope it wasn't meant for me. Cause I AM a Yankee fan. I just believe that Chuck is turning into a waste of rostor space. (I hate Clemens as well) I've been a Yankee fan for a very long time. I've seen them in some really bad days.(ie. Andy Hawkins losing a no hitter) I don't want those days to return because of dead weight. Now shut the fuck up ass wipe! Go back to spanking it to kiddie porn.

Psychopath Registered: Mar. 01 | Jewdown...the only thing directed towards you was what where i said so, im just sayin that when you have a mental problem like knobby has (the yips) there is no problem with your accuracy or anything to do with your throwing arm, its all upstairs, the only throw he has trouble making is from second, havent you ever seen a basketball player that could knock down a shot from anywhere on the court but consistently missed layups? And about him being the 5th LF, Hill, and rodriguez arent great fielders and you really arent sure what your gettin from their bats over the course of a season, Justice has consistently proven himself to be one of the best hitters around, and keeping him as the DH should help his hernias and all the other crap hes got goin on, so if u can keep Knoblauch in the lineup as your leadoff man, then its worth givin him a shot in left
