| O&A Board Regular Registered: Oct. 00  | Tuesday, March 27 Sore elbow to send Smoltz to DL Associated Press KISSIMMEE, Fla. – The Atlanta Braves said Tuesday that right-hander John Smoltz – who missed all of last season following elbow surgery – will open the season on the disabled list. The Braves expect him to miss his first two starts. Smoltz's spot in the rotation will be filled by left-hander Odalis Perez. Smoltz threw for 10 minutes in the bullpen Monday before Atlanta's game against the St. Louis Cardinals with several anxious eyes watching, including manager Bobby Cox, pitching coach Leo Mazzone and team physician Joe Chandler. Smoltz, the 1996 NL Cy Young winner, said he threw about 60 pitches at 80 to 90 percent and felt no pain. Smoltz, 33, started three games and pitched a total of six innings earlier in the spring before being slowed by tendinitis in the elbow. He hasn't pitched in a game since March 16 against the New York Yankees. The next step will be improving Smoltz's stamina to the point where he can throw five to six innings a game. | O&A Board Regular Registered: Dec. 00 | Thats not going to break my heart. Keep in mind Braves have their Opener for some reason on Monday in Cincinnati. That means Maddux will likely pitch that game, so the Mets will miss Maddux and Smoltz in that opening Series. And the Likely pitching matchups will be Glavine, Milwood, and Burkett vs. Leiter, Appier, and Reed.  | ||||
