| PALM DESERT, Calif. (AP) -- Defensive end Kevin Carter is taking his pass rushing from St. Louis to the Music City.
Rams coach Mike Martz said Wednesday that Carter had been traded to the Tennessee Titans for a first-round pick, the 29th selection overall in the April 21 draft. St. Louis already held the 20th selection in the opening round.
Carter, 27, was the first player drafted by the Rams after the team moved to St. Louis in 1995. He led the NFL in sacks in 1999 with 17, and has 39 1/2 sacks over the past three seasons.
But his production tailed off last season after a contract squabble, and he was benched twice by Martz.
Carter is the sixth defensive starter who will not be back with the Rams in 2001. The St. Louis defense ranked near the bottom last season, surrendering an average of 30 points per game.
