FINAL
New Jersey 4, Thrashers 2

ATLANTA (AP) _ Alexander Mogilny scored twice, including the go-ahead goal with about 6 1/2 minutes remaining, as the New Jersey Devils won their eighth straight road game, 4-2 over the Atlanta Thrashers on Wednesday night.

The defending Stanley Cup champions, leading the Eastern Conference, are 15-1 in their last 16 games and extended the team record for consecutive victories away from home.

The Thrashers have now made it through two seasons without beating New Jersey, dropping to 0-7-1 in their brief history.

With the game tied 2-2 Atlanta was controlling play, Brian Rafalski threaded a pass just inside the Atlanta blueline to Mogilny, who streaked in and fired a shot from the right faceoff circle that got over Norm Maracle's right pad.

Mogilny also scored late in the second period and has 39 goals this season. Sergei Brylin clinched it for the Devils with 2:20 to go, capping a two-on-one break with his 22nd goal after taking a pass from Mogilny.

Martin Brodeur stopped 29 shots for New Jersey, including a point-blank save on Ray Ferraro with about 5 1/2 minutes left.

The Thrashers tied the game at 2 with a third-period power-play goal. Gord Murphy's shot from the point was blocked in front. The puck came loose to Andrew Brunette, who fired a shot past Brodeur for his 14th goal at 6:21.

After a scoreless opening period, Rafalski put the Devils ahead 2:47 into the second with a power-play goal, just 23 seconds after Jiri Slegr went off for the first penalty of the game.

Rafalski fired a shot from the blue line that deflected off the stick of Atlanta's Steve Guolla, skidded past two players fighting for position in front and past Maracle.

The Thrashers tied it up just past the midway point of the game. Hnat Domenichelli sped in off right wing and fired a shot that was stopped by Brodeur, who couldn't control the rebound.

Atlanta's Chris Tamer failed to stuff it in, but the puck slid free as Domenichelli cut in front of the crease. He put it in the open net for his 14th goal.

New Jersey reclaimed the lead with just under three minutes left in the period on a pretty display of power-play passing. Scott Gomez
threaded a cross-ice from the boards to Scott Niedermayer cutting in from left wing, and he touched it over to an open Mogilny for the easy goal.

New Jersey Devils playoff tickets, in eight-game strips covering the first two rounds of the 2001 Stanley Cup Playoffs will be placed on sale to the general public at 9:00 AM on Friday, March 30.

The Devils next game will be Saturday, March 31st when the Devils return home to meet the New York Rangers. Game time is 3:05 and will be broadcast on ABC as well as WABC 77-AM.

Don't you guys know by now, the better you do in the regular season the worse you do in the playoffs.

1st place in Eastern Conference = 2nd round exit for your Devils.

I think the equation goes more like:

Last five seasons = 2, TWO! Big Shiny Mugs!

Let's Go De-vils!

Not this time, TeenWeek! Those days are over for us! We are such a well balanced team this year, even better than last year.

NO ONE is going to stop us! Yes, I consider myself part of the team. I worked there (the Meadowlands) for 3 years!

Like I said Francine, not this year. We are too dominant and balanced to allow that to happen. We are the number one goal scoring team in the league. Our goals for and goals against difference is approaching 100!

We have several players in the top 10 for Plus/Minus. We have our first top 10 points getter in a real long time!

Momentum is with us at the end of the season, and we shall divide and conquer in the playoffs!

LET'S GO DEVILS!!!

Yeah you say it Aint Happening. But Im pretty sure in 1998 you said the exact same thing when they were playing Ottawa in the First Round. And remember that Ottawa team 3 years ago was still developing and were nowhere near as Good as they are today.

The Devils CAN be beat. And a #1 seed losing in the First Round is Very Common in the NHL Lately.

2000- #8 San Jose over #1 St. Louis
1999- #8 Pittsburgh over #1 New Jersey
1998- #8 Ottawa over #1 New Jersey
1995- #8 NY Rangers over #1 Quebec
1994- #8 San Jose over #1 Detroit

Watch out for the Bruins. They will give the Devils a much better fight than Carolina will. Boston has played the Devils tough this year too and if DaFoe gets hot they will have a shot. And before you Devil fans get all hissy, Im not saying the Bruins are going to beat the Devils, but Ive seen ALOT more shocking things than that

I agree with you there Francine. I am being confident, I know. The Bruins are a frightening 8th seed, if they make it.

One good thing about this year's playoffs is that all have winning records, which makes it likely that an 8 seed will beat a 1 seed.

No Banger i wasn't sayin that cuz the team wasn't as good as they r now, and yes i am very confident but if they get eliminated by a good team ill just shrug it off then instead of "lets go Devils" it'll be "lets go Mets." its that easy.
