| TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) -- After flirting with .400 last season, Colorado Rockies first baseman Todd Helton is in exclusive company again: the top-paid players in baseball.
Helton has agreed to a new contract worth $151 million over 11 years, the fourth-largest deal in sports history.
The contract replaces a $12 million, four-year deal he agreed to in 1999 that was set to pay him $4.95 million in 2001 and $5 million in 2002.
In total dollars, Helton trails only Texas shortstop Alex Rodriguez ($252 million over 10 years), New York Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter ($189 million over 10 years) and Boston outfielder Manny Ramirez ($160 million over eight years).
With an average annual value of $13,727,273, Helton will rank 14th among major leaguers. The deal includes a team option for 2012.
Colorado scheduled a news conference for Thursday to announce the contract and said it was about Helton but would not divulge details. The terms were confirmed by a baseball source familiar with the terms who spoke on the condition he not be identified.
Helton, 27, was a first-round amateur draft pick in 1995 and finished second in the NL Rookie of the Year voting in 1998.
He hit .320 with 35 homers and 113 RBIs in 1999, and was voted The Associated Press Major League Player of the Year last season after hitting .372 with 42 home runs and 147 RBIs.
Helton was hitting .400 as late as Aug. 21, and easily won his first NL batting title. His .334 career average is second to Tony Gwynn (.338) among active players.
He also quieted critics who said he was a product of Coors Field by hitting .353 with 15 homers and 59 RBIs in 79 road games last year.
By reaching an agreement with Helton, the Rockies have committed $312 million to three players in the last four months.
Colorado signed left-handed pitcher Denny Neagle to a $51 million, five-year deal on Dec. 4, and gave left-hander Mike Hampton a $121 million, eight-year contract five days later.

| Where is Colorado getting all this money from?
And thats a steep price to pay a guy off just one career year. Lets see him do it again, now that the Pitchers are going to be prepared for him and he is going to be targeted. And yeah I know he hit very well on the road last year, but that Average is still inflated because of Coors Field.

| It seems like Colorado is really putting its future on the line. This is a huge debt for three dudes, they better all work out, at least for Colorados sake. Blowing your wad on helton, hampton, and neagle is a little questionable.
