BOSTON (AP) -- Dante Bichette, upset about losing his job as full-time designated hitter late in spring training, has asked the Boston Red Sox to trade him.

He made the request Tuesday through his agent, Ron Shapiro, according to the Boston Globe.

Shapiro said Bichette's greatest desire is to play for the Red Sox.

``But if he's not going to play for them, then there ought to be opportunities elsewhere,'' Shapiro was quoted as saying. ``I've expressed a desire that the club reach out and try to find other opportunities for him.''

He made the trade request of Boston general manager Dan Duquette, who gave him ``a reasonable hearing,'' Shapiro told the Globe. Duquette told Shapiro he would get back to him.

Bichette, 37, was Boston's regular DH last year after being traded from Cincinnati on Aug. 31 and expected to keep the job this year.

He figured to bat sixth in a powerful lineup that included Nomar Garciaparra, Manny Ramirez and Carl Everett. In the final days of spring training, manager Jimy Williams told him he would be the DH against lefties while lefty Scott Hatteberg did that job against righties.

But Ramirez, bothered by a hamstring injury that kept him from playing the field, was Boston's DH in Monday's 2-1 season-opening loss to Baltimore. The Red Sox will probably be without Garciaparra through the All-Star break while he recovers from wrist surgery performed Monday.

Bichette hit .289 with seven homers in 30 games with Boston last year. He's scheduled to earn $6.5 million this year and has a no-trade clause that he would be willing to waive.

``If Dante can play for another team, he will go,'' Shapiro told the Globe. ``He is not a nonplayer. And it is not a question of a role player filling a role. His role is to use his bat. So it's likely that if another opportunity comes, he will take it.''

I hate players like this. If you got beat out of a job, take it like a man and earn it back. Don't asked to be traded. He will get traded, but I hope to like a shit team like the Cubs or someting, where they don't have a DH.
