| NEW ORLEANS (AP) -- Ricky Williams has contacted the Texas Rangers about returning to baseball.
A representative of the New Orleans' Saints running back made a call to Rangers general manager Doug Melvin during the last week of spring training to discuss his interest, Rangers spokesman John Blake said Friday.
Williams has not played baseball since spending 12 games with Batavia of the Class A New York-Penn League in 1998.
``It was a very preliminary call and we have not heard anything else,'' Blake said. ``That's where it stands, and until we hear otherwise, we are not taking it very seriously.''
Saints general manager Randy Mueller said Williams had not mentioned baseball in talks with the team.
``It's all news to us,'' Mueller said.
Williams could not be reached for comment Saturday. His agent, Leigh Steinberg, whose office was closed, did not return a call for comment Saturday. The Times-Picayune of New Orleans reported that Steinberg did not return calls for comment over a period of a week.
Williams' contract with the Saints does not prevent him from playing baseball. He has been on the Rangers' restricted list since March 4, 1999, when he decided to skip spring training and concentrate on his rookie season in the NFL.
Texas purchased Williams' contract for $100,000 on Dec. 15, 1998, from the Montreal Expos, who selected the outfielder from the Philadelphia Phillies' minor-league roster.
If Williams' wanted to return to baseball, he would have to be offered back to the Phillies for $25,000. If Philadelphia did not want him back, he would be placed on waivers.
In four minor-league seasons in the Phillies' system, Williams hit .211 with four home runs and 40 RBIs.

| Would Ricky Williams be worth a whole entire Draft full of picks like he was for the Saints.

| It's times like this that prove there must be a God, because there is obviously a higher power keeping the Saints from ever having any success for a long period of time.
The Dragons are on pace to sell out just about every game, so I decided to stop being a HUA!!! |

| The Bo Jackson thing was unfortunate, but I wouldnt quite label it a "Tragedy". The guy still made a shitload of money and is living off of it now for the rest of his life. I wouldnt mind having that "Tragedy" in my life.

| Hopefully he won't sign a rediculous contract like the one he did with the Saints... If he does, it looks like his .211 might be equal to 1 inning for A-Rod in $ value.
Just another observation of insanity. |
