O&A Board Regular Registered: Dec. 00 | Theres been a heavy discussion this weekend about the Mets putting Armando Benitez in the deal for Gary Sheffield. Some writers and Radio Hosts are criticizing it saying the Mets should not give up their closer to get Sheffield, I disagree. The Mets need that bat. its not like the Mets would be trading Mariano Rivera anyway. Benitez is one of the top closers in Baseball, but hes very shaky in the Big Spot, and its not just a one time thing. He has cost the Mets and Baltimore big time in the Playoffs. Franco is coming off a come back season and he might not be at the level of Benitez, but he is not too far behind them. With Sheffield in the Lineup the Mets will be much more dangerous and will score more runs and have more oppurtunities for saves. Then again thats just my opinion, I could be wrong.

I can see his ego becoming a problem with the Mets. As much as the mets need bats, it isn't a bad thing if this deal does not happen. The Mets might do this because of Bentitez's off season problems. They could always close by committee. I think it's easier to find a closer than a big bat. quote: HUH? quote: You're RIGHT they aren't on the same level. Franco doesn't have that 'blazer' that shuts people down. He is a good setup guy - his closing days are over. For all of his misgivings, this was Benitez's first year handling the job full time. Sig Pic Under Construction

O&A Board Veteran Registered: Feb. 01 | The Mets have depth in the bullpen, I would gladly trade Benitez for Sheffield...they need the solid bat, especially with the hole that Ordonez creates in the lineup. Remember that they still have Turk, Cook, White, and Franco all coming back healthier this year. ~Matt/Froy from Jersey The Hell Hole Official Protector of Gay Marco & SwampJunk...if he ever decides to post. O&A Board Regular Registered: Jan. 01 | I agree with o&aswallow. Sheffield is another head case like Albert Belle. A very talented athlete, but one who brings his teammates down. Why have the Yanks dominated recently, team spirit. A sheffield would not work for the Mets.

Psychopath Registered: Dec. 00 | From a Dodgers fan point of view, I wouldn't want LA to make that deal. Losing a bat like Sheffields w/o replacing it would kill that line-up. So I don't see the deal happening. --------------------------

O&A Board Regular Registered: Dec. 00 | Even though I' m a Yankee fan I do follow baseball with a fever. Sheffield is your typical scumbag. If I were the Mets I wouldn't trade for him at all, much less giving up a closer of Benitez's status. He's admitted to throwing a game away when he was in Milwaukee...do you want a jerk like that in your clubhouse. Plus he will want to re do his contract once traded, or he has the option of asking for a trade next year. So you either pay him the 15-17 million a year he wants, or you will just be in the same position next year. Do yuo really think anyone on the Mets deserves more then Piazza??? They have a good enough team to make a run, and when it comes down to the trade deadline make your move then when someone is trying to dump a guy with salary. Nuff said. Go Yanks!!!!! O&A Board Regular Registered: Oct. 00 | If the Mets decide to trade Benitez, Franco can still handle the job. He closed the only WS victory, he made more appearances and pitched more innings last year than he had in 7 years. I think the Mets could afford a Benitez less bullpen, but the star returning would have to be a little more palettable than Sheffeild. Greg Vaughn anyone?
