SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) -- Dana Stubblefield has returned to the 49ers.

San Francisco signed Stubblefield, a free agent released by the Washington Redskins last month, to a six-year deal on Thursday.

The 6-foot-2, 290-pound Stubblefield spent five seasons with the 49ers -- teamed with fellow defensive tackle Bryant Young -- before leaving for Washington in 1998.

San Francisco general manager Bill Walsh was excited to have the duo back together again. Added to the mix was defensive end Andre Carter, the 49ers' top pick, seventh overall, in last week's draft.

``We feel we'll have as good as, or the best, combination of defensive tackles in football,'' Walsh said. ``I'm just excited about the first day these guys are in the huddle together, and that includes Andre Carter. I don't want to put any pressure on our coach, but, gosh, this is a real turnaround defensively.''

Accompanied by his wife, Kim, Stubblefield was all smiles as he donned a 49ers cap at the team's training facility.

``It's just something I've been dreaming about for a long time, something I never thought would happen again,'' he said.

Stubblefield, a three-time Pro Bowl selection and 1997's Defensive Player of the Year, has 393 tackles, 46.5 sacks, 15 passes defensed and two interceptions over an eight-year pro career.

He was a first-round draft pick, 26th overall, by the 49ers out of Kansas in 1993.

Through the up-and-down negotiations with the salary-cap strapped 49ers, Stubblefield said he tried to remain positive.

``So many people were excited about it, and I was, but I tried not to get too excited because I knew how tight this team was under the salary cap,'' he said.

Walsh said no players were sacrificed to make room for Stubblefield, but he would not disclose financial terms of the deal.

``We managed to pull this off and both sides are happy with the contract and the future,'' Walsh said.

San Francisco coach Steve Mariucci said he expects Stubblefield to be a leader in the locker room.

``When Dana left he was defensive player of the year, on the No. 1 ranked defense in the league, and because of salary cap reasons we weren't able to keep it together,'' Mariucci said.

``Now he's back. He's 30 years old, in good shape. He'll be the oldest guy on the defense, older than B.Y. even,'' he continued. ``He's been to the top before, He knows what it takes. He knows what a good defense is, and what a good defense isn't, and he's going to help us build that defense back up.''

Stubblefield, called Stubby by his teammates and Mariucci, couldn't wait to pair up again with Young. The 49ers begin a minicamp on Friday, and Stubblefield was ready to go.

``Give me this minicamp,'' he said. ``That's all I need with my man B.Y.''

Young was equally thrilled about the return of Stubblefield. But he admitted it will take time to bring San Francisco's defense back to where it was four seasons ago.

``It's definitely not going to come easy,'' Young said. ``It's something we're going to have to work at.''

He mite be a kick ass tackle, but he can't make up for the fact that they have horrible pass coverage.
