MICHAEL Jordan wants some of his contemporaries to help him next season in his possible comeback with the Washington Wizards - old folks like Charles Barkley, Patrick Ewing and Dennis Rodman.
Superagent David Falk, who represents Jordan and Ewing, has been in long talks trying to put together what would be the most ancient squad in NBA history. Jordan, Barkley, and Ewing are all 38, and Rodman is pushing 40.

The Wizards are already over the NBA's complicated team salary cap limit, and still paying millions to Mitch Richmond and Rod Strickland who have left the team. So Jordan, Barkley and Ewing would likely have to settle for the NBA's $1 million veteran minimum.

"The Wizards are capped out," an NBA insider said. "There's no money available. But these guys aren't playing for the money at this point."

Rodman, on the other hand, is a big spender who is thought to have squandered most of the millions he earned over his years in Detroit and Chicago. "If Rodman comes back, it will be for the money," said our source.

Jordan, presumably bored with golf and blackjack, wants to win a seventh title. But even so fierce a competitor might find it impossible to overcome a two-year layoff. "Wait until he has his first injury in training," advised one former player.

Barkley, who retired more than a year ago, "is more inclined to come back than Jordan is," said one source. But he's at least 50 pounds overweight, and has suffered serious injuries. "And this is a guy who was never in shape," added one observer. "I'm sure he'll try, but there's no way."

Ewing would have the easiest transition, having started for the Supersonics during the regular season. The former Knick has said he wants to play at least one more year, but Seattle announced it no longer wants the 7-footer, whose scoring this year dipped into single digits for the first time in his career.

"With the new rules allowing zones, it will be easier on the old bodies," said one insider. "And on offense, these guys will know how to break down the zone."

If Falk pulls it off, it would be a reunion of the first Olympic Dream Team that won gold in 1992. Rodman didn't play for the U.S., but the other three NBA players did. So did Christian Laetner, the only college player on the Dream Team who is now on the Wizards, though he's a free agent.

Another member of that team, Chris Mullin, retired a few weeks ago. He recently told The Post's Peter Vecsey he hasn't changed his mind, and he's more interested in a front-office job with the Golden State Warriors.

That would certainly be a fun team to watch. But they wont be very good. But Washington cant get any worse. At least instead of just sucking, they will suck and put fans in the seats.

If Doug Collins resigns and Eric Bischoff takes over as coach, then their will be some trouble.

Yeah, tell me I'm smoking crack [insert self-fulfilling prophecy here]...but DO NOT bet against any team if Michael Jordan is playing on it...with Ewing and a motivated Barkley and Rodman (being paid on the side by Jordan, of course) and some of the young talent the Wizards have...instant playoff team. Don't forget mental fortitude and experience...and no, I'm not smoking crack.;}

Ill bet against a team that has a 38 year old Michael Jordan who hasnt played in 3 years, surrounded by a Fat guy who hasnt had a good year in about 8 years, and another old center who cant play more than 20 minutes a night. Throw in the fact there is nobody on the Wizards to complement him. And Rodman? Yeah theres a guy you can depend on.

I wish there was some way we could take that bet...You know Jordan can still do it and I think the desk job is making Barkley hungry (do you think he'll let anyone push him around?...quicker, yes, post him up or stop him inside, NO...ahhhh, Zone defense...) and Rodman, the physical specimen, will still hustle for Jordan. Ewing is just there to eat space and contribute where he can...I reiterate my claim and, IF this deal goes down, one way or another, I hope we're both here so one of us can say I told you so...and if you remember, I'm the one that said it would be a tough series for the Knicks. Good luck to you Sir and the Knicks in game 5. (Edit note-I went back to your prediction thread and you said Knicks in 5, so I give you credit for that;))
