SAN DIEGO (TICKER) -- A.J. Burnett's no-hitter was no walk in the park.

The young righthander of the Florida Marlins overcame nine walks as he stopped the San Diego Padres, 3-0, on Saturday night at Qualcomm Stadium.

Burnett's no-hitter was the second in the major leagues this season and the third in Marlins franchise history.

The 24-year-old battled control problems but was helped by the Padres, who repeatedly bailed him out by swinging early in the count. He threw just 65 of 128 pitches for strikes, fanning seven.

"I was effectively wild," Burnett said. "I was able to find it when I needed to. It's a great feeling. I knew this day would come, I didn't know it would come so soon."

Activated from the disabled list last week, Burnett was hitting 91 miles per hour on the radar gun in the ninth inning.

"I never thought the second start back I'd throw a no-hitter," he said. "Just to be able to throw one is a great feeling. I was trying not to look up at the scoreboard too much. I knew about it after the seventh."

In the ninth, Alex Arias hit the first pitch on a line to right fielder Eric Owens. Pinch hitter Santiago Perez struck out, bringing up pinch hitter Phil Nevin.

Nevin, who batted .520 against the Marlins in 2000, popped out to shortstop Alex Gonzalez, starting a mob scene around Burnett on the mound.

It was the third no-hitter in Florida's nine-year history. Al Leiter threw one May 11, 1996 against Colorado and Kevin Brown stopped San Francisco on June 10, 1997. Burnett's nine walks equal the team record set by Leiter in a 4-1 loss at Cincinnati on May 22, 1996.

Charles Johnson, who is in his second stint with the Marlins, has caught all three no-hitters.

"I've been very fortunate," Johnson said. "I've played with some very good pitchers like Al Leiter, Kevin Brown and A.J. Burnett. To me, what's so important is this is only his second start. He missed the first month and pitched a very good ballgame. About the eighth inning, I told myself something good might happen. I didn't think no-hitter until that point. To see that happen again is great."

Johnson helped his batterymate with a two-run double in the top of the third inning.

i saw the highlights on sportscenter, and he had some great defensive plays to help him out. they also said that his 9 walks were the most in a 9 inning no-hit performance since 1900.
