Does this mean the Texas Rangers are throwing in the towel already? Gee, maybe they should spend some money to get pitching... oh, wait, they don't have any more money to spend! HAHAHAHA!

I think he's got to be one of the greatest catchers EVER!

If Texas did trade him, I think they are just trying to make room to pay A-hole. Cause they realize they can't afford any player who is better then mediocre.

only a complete idiot would trade Pudge Rodriguez. And im pretty sure the Rangers have enough common sense not to.

This was on ESPN.com.

ARLINGTON, Texas -- All-Star catcher Ivan Rodriguez, not eligible for free agency until after the 2002 season, said Tuesday he wants to know soon whether the Rangers intend to trade him or sign him to a rich contract extension.

"If I stay here, I'd love it," Rodriguez told the Dallas Morning News on Tuesday night. "This is a great place to play, and the fans are great people. But if I have to go somewhere else, I'll go. My career is not going to end if I have to put on another uniform and another hat."

As the Rangers trudged through their 15th loss in 18 games, an 8-6 decision in the opener of a three-game series with the Cleveland Indians, the question of Rodriguez's future hung like a dark cloud over The Ballpark in Arlington.

Rodriguez, sidelined by an injured left heel, said he will be ready to come off the disabled list Thursday. But he wonders how much longer he will be in the Rangers' lineup after team owner Tom Hicks said Monday the club must consider all means of improving its pitching staff, including the possibility of trading the future Hall of Fame catcher.

"If that's his idea, there's nothing I can do about it," said Rodriguez, who signed with the Rangers in 1988 at the age of 16. "If that's the way they're thinking, I respect that."

Rodriguez's attorney, Jeff Moorad, flew in from California late Tuesday night with the hope of meeting Wednesday with Rangers management. But general manager Doug Melvin indicated he had little inclination to discuss the catcher's future this soon, even though Rodriguez's trade-veto rights will be vested on June 2.

"(Trading Rodriguez) is not something we ever even talked about until it was brought up in the paper," Melvin said. "He's not a free agent for a year and a half, and now they're trying to advance that timetable. It's made it really uncomfortable."

Four years ago, Rodriguez was on the verge of being sent to the New York Yankees at the July 31 trading deadline. Instead, he walked into the office of former Rangers president Tom Schieffer and agreed to a five-year, $42 million contract extension some considered below his likely market value. But in the wake of the record 10-year, $252 million contract Hicks gave shortstop Alex Rodriguez last winter, Pudge indicated he's through giving hometown discounts.

"We have a different owner, and it's a different situation right now," the catcher said. "Four years ago, I was happy with the contract I signed. But now the situation's got to be fair to me and to the team, because it's probably going to be the last contract of my career.

"I want to stay here, but it's got to be fair. My mind is made up about that, and nobody's going to change that. But I want to know soon."

Moorad said talks regarding a contract extension for the catcher stalled in the spring and have not resumed.

"I have a great deal of respect for Tom and Doug both," Moorad said. "We've never set deadlines in this process, nor will we. But it was made clear to us that if the team signed Alex Rodriguez, the next order of business was to address Pudge's contract. Obviously, that was many months ago, and we're still on hold.

"Pudge has had a terrific career in a Rangers uniform. If that's meant to continue, that's great. If not, we'd rather know sooner than later what the team's intentions are."

i heard the yanks have interest in him
if they traded for him.. they would have to give up posada el dukee, and christian parker, and maybe even ramiro mendoza
the guy wants 20 million $$$ and texas doesnt want 2 20 million $$$ players... if the yanks gave up posada.. the trade is perfect

Well put.

The Yankees are fine the way they are with Posada, they dont need to pay a shit load of money for I-Rod.

Pudge will never wear Pinstripes. Corky Steinbrenner never wants to have the highest payroll in baseball, and to have at least 40 million tied up in two players will not allow Corky to have a winner and lower (not the highest) payroll.

And Honestly...how important is it these days to have a cannon for an arm behind the plate(especially at $20 million/year)? As long as your catcher can hit and keep the ball in front of him, your golden!

Looks like they really screwed themselves by signing ARod. I hope the whole team falls apart once IRod is out.
