| Gordon dominates at Dover

DOVER, Del. – When Jeff Gordon hit the switch that ignited his 700-horsepower engine, he had no idea how dominant he would be in the MBNA 400 at Dover Downs.
Gordon led 381 of the 400 laps at Dover for his 54th career Winston Cup victory. Gordon’s only serious challenger was Ricky Craven, who ran second for most of the second half of the event before fading to fourth.
Gordon gave up the lead briefly on lap 352 for the final round of pit stops, but his crew fired off an expert stop to get him back on the track with no problems. Craven stopped two laps later but was hampered by a slow stop.
Gordon is just the second two-time Winston Cup winner this season. The three-time Winston Cup champion set the pace early – it took him only 45 laps to begin lapping cars.
Two multi-car accidents in the first 15 laps eliminated several drivers, including Saturday’s Busch Series race winner Jimmy Spencer, Jerry Nadeau, Bill Elliott and Ken Schrader.
In the first accident, Nadeau and Spencer tried to occupy the same piece of real estate heading into Turn 1. Nadeau got his No. 25 Chevrolet onto the apron then spun up the race track, collecting Elliott and Schrader. Elliott spun down the hill and was torpedoed by Michael Waltrip.
Less than 10 laps after the restart, Spencer’s No. 26 Ford was clipped in the left rear quarter panel coming off the tight Turn 2 before slamming into the backstretch wall.
Ward Burton, Kurt Busch and Bobby Hamilton Jr. also were involved in the lap 15 wreck. Hamilton Jr., making his second straight in the No. 15 Chevrolet for the injured Joe Nemechek, retired to the garage after 98 laps.

Brack in driver's seat for points race
Associated Press
WEST ALLIS, Wis. – The last time they raced, Kenny Brack bested Helio Castroneves in a last-lap dash. This time, he beat him with the green flag still fluttering.
Brack won his second straight race, taking the Miller Lite 225 Sunday after surviving a scare on the very first turn when he and Castroneves, the Indianapolis 500 winner, lost control on cold tires.
Brack beat five-time winner Michael Andretti by 1.037 seconds in his Ford/Lola. Scott Dixon was third, 3.001 seconds back.
When they started to slide on the first turn, Brack regained control, not so Castroneves, who crashed and took out Christiano da Matta with him.
"I think Helio just lost it," da Matta said. "Helio and Kenny were racing like it was the last lap. Unfortunately, it was the last lap for me."
Brack, last year's top CART rookie, took his first checkered flag in the cockpit of a Champ car two weeks ago in Japan, when he shook off Castroneves to win the Firestone Firehawk 500.
On Sunday, Brack said he didn't even feel the contact that ended Castroneves' day early and produced one of five yellow flags that marred the 100th Champ Car race at the Milwaukee Mile.
"I couldn't feel anything. He came down on the outside and pinched me down," said Brack, who won the Indy 500 in 1999.
Tora Takagi was kicked out of the race after striking Jimmy Vasser, who was running third, and ramming him into the wall on the 133rd lap.
"I can't imagine he didn't see me, but that's racing, I guess. You know, he's a rookie," Vasser said.
During the yellow flag, the fourth of the race, Takagi was assessed an extraordinary punishment when he was ordered to park his car on the 135th lap. The punishment is believed to be unprecedented in the CART FedEx Series.
"It's disappointing," said Walker Racing's Rob Edwards, Takagi's team manager. "In Tora's view, he still had the corner at that point."
When the race began, Castroneves tried to pass Brack on the outside but his Reynard/Honda came down on Brack's Lola/Ford and it appeared as though Castroneves' left rear tire touched Brack's right front tire.
Brack maintained control, but Castroneves was done for the day, and his spinning car also took out da Matta, who is third in the points standings.
"Kenny braked a little," Castroneves said. "Apparently our tires touched and we both started to slide. I had it under control, but unfortunately another car clipped my left front wheel and the suspension broke."
Paul Tracy said his left rear suspension was damaged as a result of contact with de Matta, and on the restart he crashed into the turn two wall, bringing out another yellow flag.
"Helio came down on Brack, there wasn't enough room," Tracy said.
With his top challengers for the points race finished early, Brack increased his lead from two points over Castroneves to 23.
Rain washed out Saturday's qualifying, so the field was based on driver standings. As CART's points leader, Brack had the pole with Castroneves next to him.
"Going into that first corner on first tires, obviously it was difficult because you don't really know where the limit is," Brack said. "And we got side-by-side, me and Helio, and he came down a little bit and we both got sideways because I had to correct a little bit.
"I don't know why we didn't hit, but we didn't," Brack insisted. "It was very, very close."
This is only the third time in CART history that a pole has been awarded based on points.
Brack (130) and Andretti (75) led 205 of the 215 laps.
Brack took the lead for good on lap 183, when Andretti said he developed an under steer.
"I almost went straight into the wall and that's when Kenny went by me," Andretti said after his fourth runner-up finish at the event. "And from then on I just couldn't turn the car in the corner."
With some 20 laps remaining, Nicolas Minassian took out Christian Fittipaldi on the backstretch. Minassian hurt his right knee.
Andretti reached the podium at the Milwaukee Mile for the 10th time in 17 career starts.
"Second restart all of a sudden, Paul Tracy's gone," Brack said. "And I saw Michael in the mirror and I couldn't believe how he had gone from 10th to second that fast. But he did.
"And that wasn't a good sight because he's won here five times, so obviously he knows how to win here."
And now, so does Brack.

| I have to admit I am not a big NASCAR fan, never really understood watching a bunch of cars going in a circle but I did happen to watch this race today. I have to show my respect to Gordon he is one hell of a race car driver and seems like a nice enough guy to. I think I might have to start watching some more races, that whole pit stop thing is pretty fucking cool.

| Got back from Dover an hour and a half ago. Gordon rocked that track right from the first green flag. The only car I saw pass him was Rusty when Gordon checked up on the restart to let Harvick get his lap back. By the way, I may have set the message board record by drinking eleven beers before hitting the john. Thats 132 ounces of beer(*light) before draining the vain. Do I get an award or something?

| It's about time that people realized how good this guy really is. Jeff Gordon is da man, and will continue to be da man until he decides when he is done. But the stupid nascar fans in the midwest are idiots and should not be booing, but instead should be getting on their knees and begging for forgiveness :)
Yea i be taking that zoloff, but thaz jus keepin me from killin y'all |

Your right about Wallace being the only car to pass him but that lasted from turn 4 to turn 2. Thats why Rusty got credit for leading the lap. Because he led at the start-finish line

| LMFAO, I just watched a tape of the race and Rusty WAS the only car to pass him on the track(the rest of them did it while he was in the pits). Gordon fucking rules, and with his team getting there shit together after that mother fucker Everhan left, he will win another batch of championships.

| Damn, I feel like I just got home with all the f'n traffic at that place. Gotta give credit were credit is due - he was un-f'n-touchable. It's not the first time i've witnessed it at that track, either. Oh well. |
