As reported on The Sporting News website. Un-fucking-believable! Can it get any worse?

Rangers' Fleury enters NHL treatment program

February 28, 2001

NEW YORK -- Theo Fleury, the leading scorer for the New York Rangers, has entered a voluntary in-patient treatment program for substance abuse and behavioral health, the NHL and its players' association announced Wednesday.

Fleury, whose 30 goals and 44 assists place him among the league's top scorers, has recently been in a scoring slump. During a stretch of games on a line with captain Mark Messier and veteran forward Adam Graves, Fleury had one goal in seven games -- far off his pace of earlier this season.

Fleury, 32, is in his 13th NHL season and second with the Rangers. He previously played for the Calgary Flames and Colorado Avalanche.

Under terms of the program, Fleury will continue to receive his full salary and benefits and will have no penalty imposed as long as he complies with the prescribed treatment and aftercare program, according to a release from the NHL.

Rangers' Fleury enters NHL-sponsored substance-abuse program
Feb. 28, 2001
SportsLine.com wire reports

NEW YORK -- Theo Fleury, the New York Rangers' leading scorer, has voluntarily entered an in-patient substance-abuse program and will be sidelined indefinitely.

Celebrations like this one will be put on hold for the recovering Theo Fleury (right).(AP)

Details of the case were not revealed.

The NHL's announcement came after New York's pregame skate just hours before the Rangers played the Florida Panthers at home. Rangers officials were not immediately available for comment.

Under terms of the substance-abuse and behavioral-health program run by the NHL and the players' association, the 32-year-old Fleury will continue to receive his full salary and benefits. He will not have a penalty imposed as long as he complies with the prescribed treatment and aftercare program.

The right wing was enjoying one of his finest NHL seasons, following one of his worst.

Fleury leads the Rangers with 30 goals and 74 points in his second season after coming to New York as a free agent. His pace has slowed recently, with Fleury getting just four goals and nine assists in his last 17 games.

Last season, Fleury -- who has reached at least 30 goals eight times -- struggled with 15 goals and 64 points.

Fleury has 419 goals and 573 assists in a 13-year career. He spent 10½ seasons with the Calgary Flames, before he was traded to the Colorado Avalanche in 1999.

He signed a long-term contract with the Rangers after that season that pays him about $8 million per year.

here is the storie from CBS sports

Fleury enters NHL/NHLPA substance abuse program
NHL.com Feb. 28, 2001

NEW YORK/TORONTO -- The National Hockey League and the National Hockey League Players' Association announced Wednesday that Theoren Fleury of the New York Rangers voluntarily has entered in-patient treatment as part of the Substance Abuse and Behavioral Health Program of the NHLPA and the NHL.

Under terms of the program, Fleury will continue to receive his full salary and benefits and will have no penalty imposed as long as he complies with the prescribed treatment and aftercare program. The program's doctors, Dr. Dave Lewis and Dr. Brian Shaw, are administering Fleury's care.

In 62 games with the Rangers this season, Fleury was the team's leading scorer, netting 30 goals and 44 assists. He had eight power-play goals, seven shorthanded goals and three game-winning goals. Fleury also represented the Rangers at the 2001 NHL All-Star Game.

In a 13-year career spent primarily with the Calgary Flames, Fleury has twice topped 100 points in a season, including 51 goals and 53 assists with the Flames in 1990-91. He scored 34 goals and 66 assists for 100 points with Calgary in 1992-93, and netted 40 goals in 1993-94 and 46 goals in 1995-96.

As a rookie, Fleury played for the Flames' 1988-89 Stanley Cup team.

Fleury joined the Colorado Avalanche late in the 1998-99 season, picking up 24 points in 15 regular-season games and another 17 points in 18 playoff games.

Fleury left the Avalanche as an unrestricted free agent after the 1998-99 season and signed with the Rangers.

Thats why the Rangers had a press conference at 6:30.

What an ass Fleury is. I wonder if the team was doing good, would he be pulling this shit. And hes only doing it because for some reason he still gets paid to leave.

Thats great now we are paying 8 million to a guy to go to rehab. Thats great for the fans.

Why couldnt this happen to Kamensky?
