This is NOT GOOD!

NEW YORK (AP) -- The New York Mets placed second baseman Edgardo Alfonzo on the 15-day disabled list Friday with a lower back strain and purchased the contract of infielder Jorge Velandia from Triple-A Norfolk.

``It is something I'll have to deal with,'' Alfonzo said. ``It's not easy. But everything happens for a reason.''

Alfonzo has a torn cartilage surrounding a disc in his back. But general manager Steve Phillips said it is unrelated to a herniated disc that sidelined Alfonzo in 1995.

``He was not making the progress he needed to make while he continued to play,'' Phillips said. ``The doctors said he should shut it down for two weeks and he'll be fine.''

Alfonzo, a key cog in the Mets' lineup, has been bothered by a lower back strain since April. He left a game May 29 and didn't return to the lineup until June 7.

``It's been a tough season for Fonzie,'' manager Bobby Valentine said. ``I've probably answered more questions about his health than his play. I'm glad they found something. It was hard to believe there wasn't something there with some of the swings he took.''

Alfonzo left Wednesday night's game in Baltimore early and won't be back until at least June 29. The move is retroactive to Thursday.

He received an epidural injection Friday to relieve the pain in his back.

``I wanted to continue to play,'' he said. ``But it's not easy to deal with a bad back. I decided to go to the trainer because I didn't want to aggravate it more and have it get worse.''

Alfonzo has batted over .300 the past two seasons with 52 homers, 202 RBIs and 232 runs scored. But this year, he is only batting .251 with 24 RBIs in 54 games.

``His production has not been what it has been in the past,'' Phillips said. ``Part of it is a slow start, part is the back. It certainly has had some impact. It's hard to quantify, but it's not insignificant.''

Velandia was batting .269 with four homers and 34 RBIs for Norfolk. He will serve mostly as a backup infielder while Desi Relaford and Joe McEwing share the second-base duties for the Mets.

Thats a big blow to an already sinking ship. We are in big trouble...but if you think about it, we've played without Fonzie the whole year. Hopefully we can get to .500 or something and then be in contention, and maybe a team like the White Sox can struggle, and get rid of Ray Durham. First, we must find a way to win a few games in a row.

Yea i be taking that zoloff, but thaz jus keepin me from killin y'all.

First off its a 15 Day DL, so thats not going to end the season.

Second off, this really isnt that big of a deal. We are losing a .240 hitter who pops up to Right every time up.

Let him go on the DL now and be completely healthy when he gets back.
Ill take a healty Desi Relaford hitting .300 over a hurt Alfonzo hitting .240 for 2 weeks.

Hopefully, he will get this back thing straightened out and be back to normal in 2 weeks.
