| June 19, 2001 -- Islanders GM Mike Milbury could be on the verge of an explosive encore at Saturday's NHL draft in Florida. Milbury was the wild gunslinger at last year's draft, stealing the show with a flurry of blockbusters that changed the makeup of the Isles and introduced the Rick DiPietro goaltending era.
A year later, Milbury owns the second overall pick in a talented draft and is ready to deal it for a marquee forward. Milbury said he's had several inquiries for his No. 2 pick but no firm offers yet.
Milbury sees a ton of standout forwards being shopped and, with pressure seemingly on him to improve the club immediately, he may not be ready to wait a few years for the development of the Russian forward he covets at the No. 2 slot, Ilya Kovalchuk.
Milbury calls it "a buyer's market." Whether Milbury pulls off a blockbuster Saturday or waits until July when the free-agency period kicks off, this is for sure. Milbury is in prime position to make a big move now that owner Charles Wang has given him permission to spend.
"Twelve of the top 18 high-scoring forwards are up for grabs in a trade or as a free agent," Milbury said. "That's remarkable. There are more dollars in the till to be spent [by us] than ever before."
Milbury has monitored the availability of Ottawa center Alexei Yashin since the 1997-98 season and now the cash-strapped Senators realize they can't afford him as he enters restricted free agency.
Jaromir Jagr is on the block, and Oilers center Doug Weight is a restricted free agent, though Milbury shot down a report he'd be willing to deal his No. 2 pick and young center Tim Connolly for Weight.
Boston center Jason Allison, a restricted free agent, is on Milbury's radar screen, as is Eric Lindros. In fact, it's known Milbury had a deal arranged for Brett Lindros' brother earlier this season but the concussion-plagued Flyer refused to consider playing on Long Island.
Milbury considers three of his players untouchables - forward Brad Isbister, goalie DiPietro and defenseman Roman Hamrlik. But one thing the Isles seem to always have is a bunch of young assets.
"There's a big part of me that wants to [see the kids develop] but we have to find a way to bring an immediate jump to our on-ice product and excitement and that usually comes with a name," the GM said.
