O&A Board Regular Registered: Oct. 00 | Canseco agrees to deal with White Sox -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Associated Press CHICAGO -- The Chicago White Sox, looking to add punch to their lineup, agreed Wednesday to a one-year contract with veteran Jose Canseco. Jose Canseco spent part of the 2000 season with the Yankees. Canseco must pass a physical Thursday and hopes to be in uniform for the White Sox's game that night in Baltimore, the team said after Wednesday's 2-1 victory over Kansas City. "We think a player like Jose adds a presence to our lineup, something we feel we have been missing since losing Frank Thomas for the season," White Sox general manager Ken Williams said. "The next few weeks are important for our club in terms of fighting our way back into the race, and adding Jose's offensive potential could be a very nice bonus to a team that already is playing very well." Canseco, who will be 37 next month, was batting .284 with seven homers and 27 RBI in 41 games with Newark of the independent Atlantic League. He was released by the Anaheim Angels in spring training. Canseco is 23rd on the career home runs list with 446 and third among active players behind former Oakland teammate Mark McGwire and Barry Bonds. The six-time All-Star and 1988 AL MVP has 1,358 RBIs. Canseco has played with Oakland, Texas, Boston, Toronto, Tampa Bay and the Yankees. In 37 games with New York last season, he batted .243 with six homers. The White Sox (33-35) lost Thomas, their primary designated hitter, with a torn triceps muscle and he is out for the season.
