Roenick

VOORHEES, N.J. -- Six-time All-Star center Jeremy Roenick, who was to become an unrestricted free agent Sunday, has reached a deal with the Philadelphia Flyers, an NHL source told The Associated Press on Friday.

The Flyers called a noon ET news conference, but wouldn't reveal any details. The source, speaking on condition of anonymity, said Roenick reached an agreement once the Phoenix Coyotes gave the Flyers permission to discuss a contract.

Roenick, a two-time 50-goal scorer, led the Coyotes in goals (30) and points (76) last season. Terms of the contract were not immediately known. Roenick earned $5 million last year and was seeking about $7 million.

Phoenix general manager Cliff Fletcher gave Philadelphia, Dallas and Detroit permission to speak to Roenick on Thursday. The 31-year-old center is expected to play on a line with John LeClair.

Roenick began his career in Chicago and played eight seasons with the Blackhawks. He was sent to Phoenix before the 1996 season for a package that included Alexei Zhamnov and a first-round pick.

Roenick has 408 goals and 539 points in his 12-year career.

His signing gives the Flyers five centers, including Keith Primeau, newly acquired Jiri Dopita, Daymond Langkow and Kent Manderville.

The Flyers still are expected to trade disgruntled star Eric Lindros, a restricted free agent who sat out all of last season.

But general manager Bob Clarke has said that if a deal for Lindros isn't made before the free-agency period begins Sunday, he will proceed as if Lindros "didn't exist."

Hey he's not breathing. Don't people usually breathe?

lets see how Roenick adjusts now to Eastern Conference Hockey. Its alot different game and more hitting and more brutal then the up and down Western Conference Hockey. Lets see how Roenick adjusts. Roenick is no stranger to injuries.

I could see the case for that argument if Roenick were some sort of fancy lad, but he's not. The guy's pretty tough in general and likes to mix it up. Plus tack on all the players he's surrounded with and he should do fairly well.

Like Tocchet said, he'll probably flourish in the Eastern Conference style of play and he's got a good winger in Leclair. The Flyers have an excellent couple of lines now I would say.

Their defense will need improvement if they want to hit the upper, upper echelon though.

Angry Capitals suggest CBA rules breached

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ESPN.com news services

The Washington Capitals were angered Friday when six-time all-star center Jeremy Roenick announced a contract agreement with the Philadelphia Flyers, the Washington Post reported. Unrestricted free agents such as Roenick were not officially eligible to negotiate with any NHL team until Sunday.

"We're indignant," Capitals general manager George McPhee told the newspaper. "We play by the rules; always have, always will. No one is supposed to be able to do a deal until Sunday. This transaction is inconsistent with the terms of the CBA [collective bargaining agreement]. It reeks of impropriety."

McPhee said the Capitals were prepared to top the offer the Flyers gave Roenick, who played youth hockey briefly in this area. Roenick has agreed to a reported five-year deal worth $37.5 million but cannot officially sign the contract until Sunday.

"This was probably done two weeks ago when the player spent a week in Philadelphia," McPhee said. "A lot of teams could not even get to the starting line in this deal, and we would have been a bidder. Ted would have beat that deal. This shouldn't be allowed to stand."

The Capitals have made acquiring a top center their main priority this offseason; owner Ted Leonsis has been adamant about his desire to add more skill to the club after successive first-round playoff defeats. The Capitals, who made a bid to acquire Roenick in 1996, have never landed a top free agent in the 27-year history of the franchise but appear to have a desire to change that this summer.

Roenick, who has 947 points in 908 career games, technically is under contract to the Coyotes until Sunday, but the 31-year-old made it clear he would not re-sign with that club and was able to circumvent the July 1 date when Phoenix management initially gave him permission to begin negotiating with three teams -- Dallas, Detroit and Philadelphia -- all of whom called to ask permission. Many teams were not aware such early calls were being made, and Red Wings Senior Vice President Jimmy Devellano said his team made offers only after hearing a rumor Dallas was already negotiating with Roenick.

Coyotes General Manager "Cliff Fletcher was a gentleman," Devellano said. "He knew he could not re-sign the player, and he gave permission to every team that asked."

The Capitals received a call from Roenick's agent, Neil Abbott, on Wednesday letting them know every team now had permission to speak with the player. Sources said Washington expressed interest at that time but, in the spirit of the CBA, was set to make its offer on July 1 and not before.

Nothing precludes another team from making an offer until his new contract is signed and filed with the league, which cannot take place until Sunday. Sources said the Capitals called Abbott twice after yesterday's news conference to extend an offer and did not receive a return call. No tampering took place because the Flyers had permission from Phoenix to speak with the player, according to the league.

"A press conference does not represent a valid, bonding, registered contract," Frank Borwn, an NHL spokesman, said in response to yesterday's events in Philadelphia.

McPhee said he plans to be active in discussions with other free agents next week and also has held trade talks in pursuit of more offensive talent. The Capitals discussed getting Alexei Yashin from Ottawa and Michael Peca from Buffalo, but both went to the Islanders.

Roenick topped the Capitals' free agent wish list, NHL sources said, and they were prepared to offer him $7.5-$8 million a season Sunday. Now, St. Louis free agent center Pierre Turgeon heads their list. Turgeon likely will command a salary similar to Roenick's, with several teams in the hunt for him.

The Capitals have talked to Boston about re-acquiring center Jason Allison, but for now the Bruins are asking for three to four players in return, sources said. Edmonton is exploring trading star center Doug Weight, who is eligible for unrestricted free agency next summer, and Pittsburgh could part with restricted free agent forward Alexei Kovalev and/or Robert Lang. All of those options will be pursued if Washington fails to sign a free agent.

Washington's current top center, Adam Oates, would prefer to play elsewhere next season, sources said, but the club will exercise a $3 million option on the disgruntled team captain today. Should Washington be unable to land a top center, the likelihood of Oates returning will increase. There also is a deep crop of available quality wingers, including Keith Tkachuk, Luc Robitaille, Alexander Mogilny and Brett Hull; all would add a scoring touch to the club.

"Our objective is to do whatever we can to improve our hockey club," McPhee said. "We're involved in everything." The Capitals are continuing talks with winger Ulf Dahlen, their lone player eligible for unrestricted free agency, but the chances of getting a deal done before July 1 are bleak. The sides are about $500,000 apart. Dahlen, 34, who scored 15 goals as part of a top checking line, earned $1 million last season but is seeking about $2 million a season, league sources said.

Roenick excited about joining Flyers

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ESPN.com news services

The chance to play alongside Mark Recchi and John LeClair has Jeremy Roenick smiling.

VOORHEES, N.J. -- An enthusiastic Jeremy Roenick, calling playing in Philadelphia a "dream come true," signed a five-year, $37.5 million deal with the Flyers on Monday.

"I just can't wait to get going. I am happier than any of you guys know," the six-time All Star said at a news conference.

"You will not, will not, be disappointed," he told Flyers chairman Ed Snider, "And all you Flyers fans, let's get going! I want to win! Let's go!"

The Flyers and Roenick reached agreement in principle on the deal Friday, two days before he was to become an unrestricted free agent. The Phoenix Coyotes allowed the two parties to talk, which Roenick called "a classy move."

Roenick essentially replaces Eric Lindros, a restricted free agent who sat out all of last season while waiting for a trade. The Coyotes will get a compensatory second-round pick in next June's draft.

Roenick said he hated to leave Phoenix but did not need much prodding to choose Philadelphia because he liked the youth, size and style of the team. He called Mark Recchi and John LeClair two of the best players in the league.

"I really love the guys who are on this team," Roenick said. "I think the size of the team, our defense on the Flyers, is very big, very strong. ... There's not one guy on our line who's not physically capable of handling anybody in the league, and for me that's great."

"Coming into this building is one of the scariest experiences," Roenick said. "It's just intimidating -- and I want to be a part of that."

Roenick, a two-time 50-goal scorer, led the Coyotes in goals (30), points (76) and penalty minutes (114) last season. In 13 seasons, he has 408 goals, 947 points and 1,134 penalty minutes. He said he wanted to be known as an all-around player.

"I don't want to be known as just a goal-scorer. I don't want to be known as just a play-maker ... I want to try to do as much as I can during the course of the game and be feisty. That's what it's all about."

Roenick began his career in Chicago, where he played eight seasons, and was sent to Phoenix before the 1996 season in a package deal that included Alexei Zhamov and a first-round pick.

Both he and LeClair were on the U.S. team at the 1998 Olympics and have also been chosen for the 2002 team. LeClair agreed last month to a $45 million, five-year deal with the Flyers.

In other news, the Flyers shipped center Daymond Langkow to the Phoenix Coyotes for a pair of draft choices.

The 24-year-old Langkow played in 71 games for the Flyers last season and had 13 goals, 41 assists and 54 points. He scored three power-play goals and two game-winning goals and averaged 18:37 minutes of ice time.

"He is a top young player who hasn't turned 25 yet but has played six full seasons in the NHL," Phoenix general manager Cliff Fletcher said. "He is a player with great speed who is tenacious, competitive and gritty."

In six NHL seasons with Tampa Bay and Philadelphia, Langkow has played in 382 games and recorded 68 goals, 120 assists, 188 points and 242 penalty minutes.
