BUFFALO, N.Y. (June 30) -- Dominik Hasek was traded by the Buffalo Sabres to the Detroit Red Wings late Saturday night for Vyacheslav Kozlov, a 2002 first-round draft choice and future considerations.

Sabres spokesman Michael Gilbert announced the trade just before 1:30AM ET on Sunday, adding the team would have no further comment until later in the day.

The Sabres had until the end of Saturday to pick up Hasek's one-year, $9 million option, trade him or lose him to unrestricted free agency.

Gilbert said the deal was made before the midnight deadline on the contract option. It was not immediately known if the Sabres or Red Wings picked up Hasek's option or whether Detroit restructured the goalie's deal.

Hasek's agent Rich Winter declined to comment immediately, saying he was busy explaining the details to Hasek.

What a steal for the Redwings. Couldnt Buffalo have gotten more for Hasek than just Slava Kozlov and a Draft Pick? Where was Glen Sather, We could have offered more than that! The Rangers are going to need goaltending if they are going to make the playoffs it dont matter if they get Jagr and Sakic. The Playoffs will not come with Guy Hebert or Kirk Mclean, or Mike Richter coming off 2 ACL injuries consecutively.

Wow. The Wings stole him. Personally, I don't like Hasek at all but you can't argue with the results he's had. He can win playoff series by himself (he basically won a gold medal that way too).

I am completely anti-Rangers but I honestly don't blame them for not going for Hasek. He is probably done after this year since he's basically just playing to stay in shape for the Olympics and guarantee the starter spot over Cechmanek. And the Rangers have no shot at the Cup this year anyway, so screw him.

The Blues were supposedly really interested in him so I wonder what the hell they offered. I mean they couldn't beat this deal? That's sad. Last week, they pawned off Turek on Calgary but they couldn't complete the deal for Hasek. Another mishap by St. Louis.

But there's also this: there are over 5,000 men in this city, who know that being a policeman is an endless, glamourless, thankless job that's gotta be done.

I know it, too, and I'm damn glad to be one of them."

Hasek was basically going to the Wings or the Blues. He was only going to play for a contender, and in this state of the NHL, only about 7 teams are legitimate contenders.

This deal was one of the few times that an owner and a player had discussed all issues completely and try to work out was was best for both the team and the player. Yes, the Wings got a steal by sending a Tin Man for the best player ever (IMHO), but Hasek had given Buffalo so much over the years that if he wanted the HSBC Stadium known as Hasekville, they would have obliged.

God help me, now I will be rooting for the American version of the Canadiens.

Hey, maybe the Rangers can get Osgood?

Detroit welcomes Hasek to Hockeytown

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Associated Press

DETROIT -- The newest member of the Red Wings -- two-time league MVP Dominik Hasek -- says his goal in Detroit "is to win the (Stanley) Cup, ... nothing else."

The six-time Vezina Trophy winner was acquired over the weekend in a trade with the Buffalo Sabres for veteran left wing Vyacheslav Kozlov.

"One day I plan to go with my family back to the Czech Republic. My goal is to be here next season, of course to win, that's my desire," Hasek said at a Monday morning news conference. "Right now we are all excited to go to this hockey city -- Hockeytown -- to just be here and win."

Buffalo also gets a draft pick next year and other future considerations.

Hasek said he provided the Sabres with the names of three teams for whom he would like to play. He would not name the teams Monday, but said one of them offered him more money than the Red Wings.

"It was very important for me to play in a town where the people love hockey," Hasek said. "The other teams are good teams, but not as special as Detroit."

Chris Osgood, who has been the Red Wings' starting goaltender for the past four seasons, appears to be on the way out.

"It's not often you can get a goaltender that matches his record," Red Wings coach Scotty Bowman said.

Detroit general manager Ken Holland has called Hasek "the best goaltender in the National Hockey League."

The Red Wings agreed to pay Hasek $8 million the coming season, putting him on par with captain Steve Yzerman and star defenseman Nicklas Lidstrom. Hasek could earn $8 million in the optional second and third years of the agreement, for a total of $24 million.

"It was a deal that we just could not pass up," Holland said. "Dominik is coming off another Vezina Trophy winning season and were all thrilled that he will be suiting up in a Red Wing uniform this fall."

Despite struggling in the first part of last season, Hasek, 36, bounced back to have a stellar campaign.

By going 18-8 down the stretch with five shutouts, Hasek finished with a 37-26-4 record, matching a career-high for victories.

Kozlov, 29, just completed his eighth season with Detroit. He had only 20 goals and 38 points in 72 games, but had a team-high four goals in the Red Wings' first-round playoff loss to Los Angeles.

"It's always tough when you have to lose a teammate like that," Lidstrom said. "But you have to give up something to get a player like Hasek."

The Sabres had until the end of Saturday to pick up Hasek's one-year, $9 million contract option, trade him or lose him to unrestricted free agency.

The trade ended almost two months of speculation involving Hasek, who had said he wanted to play for at least one more year -- but only with a contending team.

"I told them, `My time in Buffalo is over, and I want to move,"' Hasek said.

Hasek finished fourth with a 2.11 goals-against average and led the league with 11 shutouts. He was rewarded with his sixth Vezina Trophy as the NHL's top goalie, one short of the record held by Jacques Plante.

In nine seasons with the Sabres, Hasek, who led Buffalo to the 1999 Stanley Cup finals, also won the Hart Trophy in 1997 and 1998 as NHL MVP.

Osgood is second in team history in wins (221) and shutouts (30) and is to make about $4 million next season.

Manny Legace, who played well when Osgood slumped at the beginning of the season, seems slated to be Hasek's backup.

"Obviously, we're not going to carry three goaltenders," Holland said. "Chris Osgood played real well for us and is a good NHL goalie. But Dominik is the best there is."

Osgood was surprised by the news but plans to fight to stay with Detroit, said his agent, Rollie Thompson.

"Chris will be in camp," Thompson said. "He has every intention of being the No. 1 goalie."

I don't know whether to laugh or cry at that last statement by Osgood's agent. Hey Chris, just pack your bags and shove off. Your job was almost completely taken by MANNY LEGACE!!!! You're getting traded to a crap team like the Canucks or Rangers and you're going to like it.

Canucks are a good team, and the Rangers arent going to be a crap team either next year. They stil arent going to be very good, but they will be better.

The Rangers can't get any worse then they've been over the last 4 years. I don't think the Rangers will make much noise this year. Maybe in two years though.

Hopefully Jagr will come over, for not too much, and in 2 years they hopefully resemble a contender. I would have loved to have seen Weight come back here. He's a good fit for the Blues.
