O&A Board Regular Registered: Oct. 00 | July 11, 2001 -- EXCLUSIVE The Knicks have called on The Admiral. In an ironic twist, San Antonio's heavy pursuit of free agent Chris Webber may leave Spur center David Robinson out in the cold. As a result, the Knicks, who have their fishing poles in several small ponds, have stuck another one into the ocean, looking to catch a big fish. The Knicks have only the $4.5 million salary-cap exception to offer Robinson, whose top priority is to re-sign with San Antonio. But if the Spurs land C-Webb, they would have to create cap space by renouncing Robinson's rights. If that happens, the 7-foot-1, 250-pound future Hall of Famer could have no choice but to sign with another club for the $4.5M exception, though it's not his preference. It would be quite a paycut for Robinson, who made $14.7 million in the final year of his contract. The Knicks have contacted Robinson's agent, Jeff Austin, to express their interest. And though it's a longshot and hinges completely on C-Webb signing with the Spurs, Robinson considers New York a possibility. "He would have interest in New York," Austin told The Post. "It would be a team he'd be interested in. The Spurs are still his first choice and there's still a chance. But New York would be a possibility. I think it would be difficult, though." However, Robinson, 36 next month, does not want to play in a losing environment, which might rule out under-the-cap clubs such as the Bulls, Clippers and Detroit. Those teams can offer him more than $4.5 million. The Spurs were offering $7 million, but Robinson is seeking more. If it comes down to Robinson having to settle for the exception, the Knicks have a definite shot, even though several over-the-cap teams have spoken to Austin. Robinson knows the Knicks have an obvious need for a big man, and he still considers the club he vanquished in the '99 Finals as a title contender. The other thing going for the Knicks is that they are willing to spend their entire $4.5 million exception. Some over-the-cap teams who have expressed interest in Robinson are even leery of spending the entire $4.5M if it puts them into the luxury-tax bracket. Teams are taxed 100 percent for every dollar over the luxury-tax threshold. Hence, Robinson's $4.5M wage could wind up costing $9 million. The Knicks aren't concerned about that. The cachet of signing a name such as Robinson, while also filling a need, would be exactly what Garden chief James Dolan covets. Robinson's rep spoke with Spur officials yesterday and has gotten indications San Antonio still has sincere interest. But sources close to Webber continue to suggest C-Webb is very much intrigued with joining forces with Tim Duncan. Meanwhile, the Knicks continue to send gift packages to Webber through the mail. C-Webb has received a big duffel bag with the inscription "Pack your bags for Madison Square Garden," a Fannie Pack with a Knicks' water bottle, and a model replica of "The World's Most Famous Arena."

O&A Board Regular Registered: Oct. 00 | quote: He's a FA and the only way he would be cut loose would be if SA signs Webber and would have to renounce Robinson. Not many teams have the $$ to sign him AND be championship caliber. With the luxury tax coming up, a lot of players are gonna have to bite the bullet and take less $$ Sig Pic Under Construction

O&A Board Regular Registered: Dec. 00 | Thats what Im saying, There is no way David Robinson is coming to the Knicks for the exception of only 4.5 Million. If David Robinson came here, the Knicks would have to clear out money and have to get rid of Sprewell or Camby. Which certainly isnt worth it for Robinson.

O&A Board Regular Registered: Oct. 00 | I just hope LJ and Longley 'retire' due to their problems. That may help out a bit, but they are so over the cap. Sorry, I've NEVER been crazy about Allan Houston and giving him the 'max' is a bit muchquote: This just in from CBSSportsline - The Admiral has re-upped This message was edited by MashedPotatohead on 7-12-01 @ 6:24 PM

O&A Board Regular Registered: Dec. 00 | And David Robinson just re-signed with San Antonio (big surprise) for 25 million over 2 years. So he is making 3 times the amount he would have made if he came to the Knicks. Hmm play for a contender, the team you have played with all your career and make 3 times more money, or go to a team in Chaos, for 3 times less money? That must of been a tough Decision for Mr. Robinson.
