INSTANT REPLAY

Michael Andretti of Newman/Haas Racing moved into sole possession of third place on the all-time Champ Car victory list when he captured the 2001 Molson Indy before a record-setting crowd of 72,976 at Toronto's Exhibition Place. Andretti (Big Kmart/Texaco/Havoline Ford-Cosworth/Lola) snapped a tie with Al Unser by claiming his 40th Champ Car win overall, leaving him behind only A.J. Foyt (67) and Mario Andretti (52) on the career list. It was also his sixth win at Toronto, joining previous victories in 1989, '91, '92, '94 and '95. Andretti finished a comfortable 6.527 seconds ahead of runner-up Adrian Fernandez (Tecate/Quaker State/Patrick Racing Ford-Cosworth/Reynard) while native Canadian Paul Tracy (KOOL Honda/Reynard) of Team KOOL Green finished third.

Andretti led 34 of 112 laps en route to the victory and trimmed 20 points off his 22-point deficit to series leader Roberto Moreno (Visteon Ford-Cosworth/Reynard) of Patrick Racing when Moreno finished a scoreless 13th. Moreno left Toronto with a series-leading 90 points, followed by Andretti with 88 and Gil de Ferran (Marlboro Honda/Reynard) of Marlboro Team Penske with 75.

Toronto, Ontario, Canada, July 13 — Their pop-off valves back to pre-Detroit configuration, the Honda-powered Reynards of Gil de Ferran and Dario Franchitti bracketed Christian Fittipaldi's Toyota/Lola atop the timesheets in the first day of practice for Sunday's Molson Indy Toronto. De Ferran was quickest in both the morning and afternoon sessions, turning a 59.107sec lap in the morning before a minor crash at the end of the session. He recovered in the afternoon to steer his Marlboro Team Penske entry to a best lap of 58.400, .236sec quicker than Fittipaldi and .257sec quicker than Franchitti who, like de Ferran earlier, punctuated the final moments of the session with a shunt of his own.

"Since we unloaded from the truck this morning the car has been handling really well," said de Ferran, who won the Toronto pole in 1999. "We had a few ideas to try which improved the car, but at the end of the first session I managed to hit the wall and destroy my front wing – which was not too clever.

"Apart from the wing the car was okay, so we were able to improve our time in the afternoon before I had to serve an 8min penalty (for causing a red flag in the morning session)."

Fittipaldi's day was not without its self-inflicted challenges. After posting his best time in the afternoon session in the primary car, he over-revved his engine and was forced to switch to his back-up Kmart Toyota/Lola.

"It was my mistake," said Fittipaldi. "I over-revved the engine big time and had to change cars. I switched to my spare, but in the last half-hour there were a lot of red flags and we didn't get much accomplished."

Ironically, one of the red flags was the result of a collision between Cleveland winner Franchitti and Memo Gidley, who finished just .305sec behind the Scotsman at Burke Lakefront Airport. The two cars came together in Turn 5 in the afternoon practice session and, although neither car was badly damaged, with just 4min remaining, the practice was given the checkered flag.

"I don't think Memo saw me," said a non-plussed Franchitti. "He'd just come out of the pits and passed a guy… basically, I think he was unsighted. He didn't see me, and he didn't expect me to pass him there. It's no big deal.

"It was a very positive day. The car feels good, but the track seems a little slippery. It should make for an interesting qualifying session here, as always; it comes down to the last lap, when the track is at its best."

Underlining Honda's return to dominant form was the fact that Honda-powered cars monopolized the next five spots with Tony Kanaan (Morris Nunn Racing), Michael Andretti (Team Motorola), de Ferran in his back-up car, Paul Tracy (Team KOOL Green) and de Ferran's teammate Helio Castroneves. Kanaan might have been faster but for team owner Morris Nunn.

"I had a good lap going, and Morris called me in," he said. "I think maybe he didn't want to show all we have. But that's ‘could've, should've.’ I'm fourth and that's all I can truly believe, but I do know I can go faster."

Castroneves almost certainly would have been faster, but for the fact that he didn't get a lap in the afternoon session after suffering what a Marlboro Team Penske spokesperson termed "engine-related" problems. Having already used up his allotted switches between primary and back-up cars in the morning session, he was sidelined when the "engine-related" problems cropped up on his "out" lap in the afternoon, thus his morning time of 59.136sec would be his best of the day.

Cristiano da Matta was the second-fastest "un-Honda", backing up Newman/Haas teammate Fittipaldi's time with a lap of 59.174 in his Toyota/Lola, while Alexandre Tagliani had the 10th-best time – and was ninth-fastest driver – overall in his Ford/Reynard.

"The car was quick coming out of the box this morning," said Tagliani, "and Team Player's made some changes through the session, so we ended up fifth-fastest. In between sessions I wanted to try something different on the rear of the car to see if it would improve performance, but it did not make the car better.

"Overall, though, I'm quite happy to be in the top 10. With 5min left to go in the session Team Player's put on a set of fresh tires, but decided against it because there was not enough time to cure them properly."
