O&A Board Veteran Registered: Feb. 01 | TAMPA, FLORIDA (TICKER) -- Ryan Leaf didn't stay unemployed long. Two days after his disastrous tenure ended with the San Diego Chargers, Leaf was claimed off waivers by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. A bust with the Chargers after being selected with the second overall pick in the 1998 draft, Leaf was released on Wednesday. After he was waived by the Chargers, Tampa Bay was the only one of the 31 teams in the league to submit a claim in the two-day period the NFL uses at this time of the season. "It is a very unique opportunity when a player of Ryan Leaf's ability is put on the wire, allowing a team to claim him," Tampa Bay general manager Rich McKay said. "We liked Ryan a lot coming out of college and have a pretty good understanding of some of the problems he has experienced over the last couple of years. For us this could be a short-term free look, but his abilities warrant that we perform due dilligence." Leaf, 24, will try to jump-start his career with the Bucs, who have Shawn King as their starting quarterback. But after a disappointing season ended with a wild card loss to Philadelphia, Tampa Bay reportedely was looking for challengers to King. Doug Flutie and Brad Johnson have been two players that have been mentioned as possible replacements. The Chargers paid a king's ransom to select Leaf in the 1998 draft, sending two players and a pair of first-round picks to Arizona before signing him to a five-year, $31.25 million contract. Due to his original contract with the Chargers, Leaf arrives in Tampa at very little cost to the club. His base compensation will be minimal. In addition the Bucs would not owe Leaf anything if he is released before the start of the season. In San Diego, Leaf was a bust on and off the field. He threw 15 interceptions and just three touchdowns before losing his starting job as a rookie. Off the field, he turned off teammates with his defiant attitude and was caught on camera berating a reporter. His second season was wiped out after he underwent surgery on his right shoulder in July 1999. While rehabilitating, Leaf was suspended four games for detrimental conduct. The team claimed Leaf refused to do a workout exercise and cursed former general manager Bobby Beathard and strength and conditioning coach John Hastings. Following the 1999 season, a few of San Diego's defensive players expressed their displeasure with Leaf's immature antics and urged Beathard to trade him. But Leaf returned last season and continued to struggle, ranking second to last in quarterback rating (56.2), ahead of only Cincinnati's Akili Smith. He threw 11 touchdowns and 18 interceptions, completing 50 percent of his passes. ~Matt/Froy from Jersey The Hell Hole Official Protector of Gay Marco & SwampJunk...if he ever decides to post. Psychopath Registered: Dec. 00 | Leaf can be a good player if he plays up to his ability. But I think the Bucs should have tried to go after Flutie instead. Cuz if Leaf doesn't pan out, the Bucs will have 2 head cases on their team in Leaf and Keyshawn. --------------------------

O&A Board Regular Registered: Jan. 01 | i don't see leaf turning it around. he's got a crazy attitude problem, and i don't think he can lead a team just yet. however, if his ego changes as he gets older he could be a good backup in tampa because he has talent. O&A Board Veteran Registered: Feb. 01 | He's a head case...which makes for a great linebacker, but not for a great quarterback. ~Matt/Froy from Jersey The Hell Hole Official Protector of Gay Marco & SwampJunk...if he ever decides to post. Also providing total immunity to Fayth

O&A Board Regular Registered: Dec. 00 | Leaf and Keyshawn. Now those two personalities would make for a better sitcom rather than a Quarterback and Wide Receiver.

Psychopath Registered: Nov. 00 | I've always thought Leaf would be reborn some way. Either with a new team, or in the CFL or Arena League, like Flutie. I've always believed in Leaf, no matter how dark the time. Now that he's with Tampa, he'll finally have some receivers, because love him or hate him, Keyshawn can make it happen. Just remember Leaf never had what he has in Tampa. I'm more than willing to give him a shot. Visit this Website New York Dragons Arena Football!!! Psychopath Registered: Aug. 00 | DID anyone read in the paper what Bobby Bethard said about Leaf and how he went out of his way to be a DICK.....not in those words of course..but that was the GIST of the comments he made. SOUR GRAPES on his part, PERHAPS....but fair and reasonably TRUTHFUL. PICKING OFF ASS F`s 1 BY 1 THE SNIPER
