BOSTON (AP) -- Nomar Garciaparra's right wrist is fine and so is his batting stroke as he homered in his first game of the season Sunday.

The Boston shortstop, who underwent surgery on opening day, hit a solo homer in the sixth, against the Chicago White Sox.

In the first three innings, the two-time AL defending batting champion went 0-for-2 with an error for the Red Sox.

But in the sixth, Garciaparra led off with a 405-foot homer to straightaway center field on a 2-1 pitch from Sean Lowe. As he rounded third base, he slapped his right hand -- apparently unconcerned about the wrist -- with coach Gene Lamont's.

Garciaparra's start wasn't as productive.

He made an error and grounded out in the first inning. In the third, he struck out with runners at first and second and two outs.

As he came to the plate for the first time, the crowd gave him a 40-second standing ovation that didn't end until he took Lowe's first pitch for a ball. He grounded out to third baseman Jeff Liefer on the next pitch.

In the top of the first, leadoff batter Ray Durham hit a grounder to the right of Garciaparra, who let the ball bounce off the heel of his glove and threw late to first baseman Brian Daubach for an error.

Garciaparra showed no ill effects from the injury as he went into the hole in the second inning to field Paul Konerko's grounder and fired the ball to Daubach for the out.

Garciaparra, who hit .357 in 1999 and .372 last year, batted in his customary third spot, giving the Red Sox a strong middle of the order they envisioned in spring training -- Garciaparra followed by cleanup hitter Manny Ramirez, designated hitter Dante Bichette and center fielder Carl Everett, who returned from a knee injury Friday after missing 32 games.

The Red Sox started Sunday's game a season-high 3 1/2 games behind the first-place New York Yankees in the AL East. But the return of Bret Saberhagen -- dominant Friday night in his first start in nearly 22 months -- Everett and Garciaparra should help.

The Red Sox also expect to have Pedro Martinez and catcher Jason Varitek, both on the disabled list, back this season.

Garciaparra had surgery on his right wrist April 2 and played four games last week on rehabilitation assignment for the Triple-A Pawtucket Red Sox at Indianapolis.

He went 7-for-16, a .438 average, with two doubles, one homer and four RBIs in three games at shortstop. He made one error. He was the designated hitter in his other game.

He met with team doctor Bill Morgan and manager Jimy Williams on Saturday, clearing the way for him to play Sunday. Infielder Lou Merloni was sent to Pawtucket to make room on the roster.

Garciaparra, who turned 28 on July 23, underwent surgery to repair a split and frayed tendon and the sheath that surrounds it. An exposed bone at the bottom of the sheath, an injury that had not been known previously, was smoothed during the operation.

He injured the wrist when he was struck by a pitch from Baltimore's Al Reyes in September 1999.

Yes, and they will be good in the playoffs too. Hopefully it will be a Cubs-Red Sox world series, since the mets wont make it, thats what ill root for. But, yes they will make the playoffs

hey, i know its a longer shot than me getting hit by lightning while on line collecting my Big Game lottery winnings, but you have to admit, it would be pretty cool for baseball in general.

The Sox will definetly make the playoffs? Not if Pedro doesnt come back. Oakland is going to be so far ahead of Boston before you know it, and the Sox have absolutely NO CHANCE of winning the Division.

And even if the Sox get into the playoffs, they will get crushed against Seattle in the First Round.

You might be right about the Sox Francine, but i can see the Cubs coming out of the NL, especially now that they have McGriff. The Sox will need Pedro for any chance in the playoffs. But even without him, i think they can get to the playoffs over oakland

I'm telling you, this is the Sox year. It's too fucked up for it not to be. It's like EVERYTHING has been and is going wrong yet they are still winning. They have like 10 guys injured and still win. The team is divided into more factions than the WWF and a good majority of them hate their manager, yet they are still winning. It's fucked up but that's the Sox for you. Last year was sort of the same thing minus the really high amount of injuries but the difference was that they tried to trade for guys to help that ended up not (Brogna, Gilkey, Sprague, etc.). This year they haven't done that shit. Pedro will come back and they will win some more. I don't want them to but they do.

Anyway here's my playoff predictions:
Yanks/Indians/Mariners/Sox
Braves/Cubs/Arizona/SF

Sox over Mariners in 4
Yanks over Indians in 4
Braves over SF in 3
Arizona over Cubs in 4
Sox over Yanks in 6
Arizona over Braves in 6
Sox over Arizona in 5

Here's hoping that I'm wrong.

I know it, too, and I'm damn glad to be one of them."

Here we are Sox - Cubs, game 7 of the World Series, its all tied up at 2,2 in the bottom of the 47th and Holy Shit they are calling the game on account of snow. Guess we will pick this one up in the Spring.

Go SOX!!!!!!!!!

It was great to see Nomar play well. I am actually looking forward to Veritek more then Pedro. Hatteburg has blown a lot of plays at second and home
