O&A Board Regular Registered: Oct. 00 | Padres deal Hitchcock to Yankees for prospects -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ESPN.com news services NEW YORK -- The New York Yankees boosted their starting rotation Monday, acquiring left-hander Sterling Hitchcock from the San Diego Padres for two minor-leaguers. Sterling Hitchcock Starting Pitcher New York Yankees Profile 2001 SEASON STATISTICS GM W L Sv K ERA 3 2 1 0 15 3.32 Hitchcock, who spent parts of four seasons with the Yankees, is coming back to New York for minor-league pitcher Brett Jodie and outfielder Darren Blakely. Hitchcock, 30, has made only three starts this season in his comeback from reconstructive elbow surgery. He went 2-1 with a 3.32 ERA in 19 innings. With Orlando Hernandez probably out until September and Roger Clemens fighting an injured groin, the Yankees were looking to solidify their starting rotation. Manager Joe Torre currently is using two rookies -- left-handers Ted Lilly and Randy Keisler -- and has grown frustrated with Keisler's inconsistency. The three-time defending World Series champion Yankees lead the AL East by 3{ games over Boston and have the second-best record in the majors at 64-41. Hitchcock was traded from the Yankees to Seattle after the 1995 season in the deal for Tino Martinez and Jeff Nelson. Hitchcock won 13 games in his only season with the Mariners before being sent to San Diego. He has playoff experience, going 3-0 with a 1.23 ERA for the Padres in 1998, winning the NLCS MVP that year. Hitchcock is making $5 million in the final season of a $15.5 million, three-year contract and is eligible for free agency at the end of the season. Jodie made one start for the Yankees this season, allowing six runs in two innings of a loss to Toronto. The right-hander, 24, was 10-4 with a 2.87 ERA at Triple-A Columbus. The Yankees originally acquired Blakely in March in a trade for Anaheim. Information from The Associated Press was used in this report. O&A Board Regular Registered: Oct. 00 | even if it doesnt work, the yanks are the only fuckin team in baseball that can afford to make a mistake. They only give up 2 prospects for a lefty starter? That is unreal. I guarantee you, all the other teams in the AL race, including the Mariners, would not make that deal because of the risk and the players they would lose. But, of course, it doesnt matter to the yanks, they can get whoever they want, whenever they want to. O&A Board Regular Registered: Oct. 00 | This move was necessary. El DUque may not come back. Keisler sucked and worst case scenario, you have no idea what will happen to Clemens. DOn't give me this bullshit that the Yankees are the only ones who could afford it. Let me see here, here are some teams that have huge payrolls, Dodgers, Boston, Mets, Braves, Baltimore, etc. The Yankees just care more about winning championships than turning a huge profit. Steinbrenner actually puts his money back into the team because he loves winning more than anything. The Mets, gave up on winning back in May and now are salary dumping with Wendell, Cook, and Reed gone. The Mets are a piece of shit poorly run organization and Steve Phillips might be the worst general manager in all of baseball. If Steinbrenner is smart at all he signs Cashman immediately and gives him whatever he wants for making these key trades and pickups that any other team could have done.

O&A Board Veteran Registered: Aug. 00 | I think it was a good move. The yanks bats have seem to have come alive over the past few weeks, and pitching is always good to have. With Clemens, Pettite, and Moose pitching the way they are, the addition of another starter is great, ad espeially a good lefty starter. I think we may see another championshp in NY again this year. I know Seattle is tough, but I'll take the NY starters against their top guys any day... Why fucking bother "Think before you write" - Froy E-Mail Me
