Psychopath Registered: Jul. 01 | ...Hopefully this will change your mind: Yashin, Isles hammering out unprecedented $90M contract August 7, 2001 Alan Hahn Newsday The Islanders opened the summer with a bang when they landed two star centers in Alexei Yashin and Michael Peca in a pair of draft-weekend blockbuster trades that made headlines around the league. They're about to close the summer in similar style, as they once again have stolen the headlines with their latest ambition. According to a report in New York's Newsday, the team is preparing to sign the 27-year-old Yashin to a 10-year contract worth about $90 million. Both numbers are unprecedented in NHL history. GM Mike Milbury refused to comment on the contract negotiations but did say he was "optimistic" a deal was going to get done "before training camp." He said the same regarding Peca, who according to a report in the New York Post has a five-year deal on the table worth around $20 million. The Post also reported Yashin's contract offer to be a nine-year deal worth $80 million. Peca last week told Newsday that he expected to sign "sooner rather than later" and said he "never really doubted at all" that he would sign with the Islanders, adding that the Islanders "knew the basic ballpark" salary he was seeking. Yashin, who is involved in an offseason conditioning program in Switzerland, could not be reached for comment. For the Islanders, the news is a major turnaround from just two summers ago, when the team -- under previous ownership -- was slashing its payroll to a league-low $15 million. After owners Charles Wang and Sanjay Kumar took over in April 2000, the team increased its payroll to $25 million last season. This year, it is expected to exceed $30 million. And very soon, the once financially strapped franchise will have the richest contract in NHL history on its budget. Yashin's deal beats the previous record contract: Jaromir Jagr's six-year, $48 million deal signed in December 1997. This summer's highest contract was Joe Sakic's five-year, $47.5 million deal with the Colorado Avalanche. Yashin might have the richest contract in NHL history, but he won't be the league's highest-paid player. Jagr, who will make $10,033,333 next season, still owns that record. Overall, it is a sound investment for the Islanders. Yashin, who turns 28 on Nov. 5, will be locked up for virtually the rest of his career. This is a player who over the past four seasons in which he played (1996-99, 2000-01) has not missed a single game and has posted 329 points (152 goals) in 328 regular-season games. He was a Hart Trophy finalist in 1998-99, when he scored a career-high 44 goals and 94 points. In the postseason, however, his numbers are far less impressive, as he has just six goals and 15 points in 26 playoff games. But the Islanders, who haven't made the playoffs since 1994, would love just to get there at this point. There was some fear in trading for Yashin because of his contract history. He sat out the entire 1999-2000 season with the Ottawa Senators because he and his agent, Mark Gandler, wanted the Senators to rework his existing deal as per a promise the Senators made to them earlier in his career. Ottawa refused, and after an arbitrator ruled against Yashin, the center returned to complete his contractual obligation last season, when he made $3.6 million. He scored 40 goals and had 88 points, leading the team in both categories. . . . The Islanders have yet to sign Yashin and Peca, but they did cross another key restricted free agent off their list last week when they inked defenseman Adrian Aucoin to a one-year, $1.6 million contract. Aucoin was acquired at the start of draft weekend in June from the Tampa Bay Lightning along with forward Alexander Kharitonov for defenseman Mathieu Biron and a draft pick. . . . Defenseman Kenny Jonsson and forward Mark Parrish still are unsigned. Parrish has a two-year offer on the table, but talks with Jonsson appear to be at a standstill. With Wang's stringent mandate about having a player either signed in time for training camp or locked out for the entire season, Jonsson's situation could be precarious if he is not signed by September . . . In other news involving Peca, the former Buffalo Sabres captain recently learned he will be able to keep his No. 27, which was worn by Parrish last season. Parrish volunteered the number to Peca, who was grateful for the gesture. Parrish will wear No. 37 next season . . . One report said Yashin, who wore No. 19 with the Senators but can't with the Islanders because it will be retired this season in honor of Hall of Fame center Bryan Trottier, will wear No. 90 next season. Yashin might have opted for a reversal of his old number, 91, but that was worn by former Islanders coach and fan favorite Butch Goring during the Stanley Cup era. . . . Other minor signings by the Islanders last week include defensemen Evgeny Korolev and Ray Schultz, goalie Stephen Valiquette and center Jason Krog. Much thanks to Grumpy and my "master" for this kick ass sig pic :) ~~Psycho Bitch~~ "The definition of insanity is repeating the same behavior over and over expecting different results" Proud graduate of Metalfan's purgatory for newbies....but still his "slavegirl" :p

O&A Board Regular Registered: Dec. 00 | They could have signed him for alot cheaper. Yashin would be hesitant to hold out again, for the 2nd time in 3 years and with a new team. Yashin is barely a Top 20 Player in the NHL.

O&A Board Regular Registered: Aug. 00 | thanks pb for the info. i guess now you have some extra time on your hands to research this stuff huh? (sorry, bad joke, i know). and francine, did you read those numbers that he's put up? he is most definitely among the top 20 in the league, and i hope they sign him asap. tequila, i do have a problem w/ what you said tho: NONE of these players are worth the kind of money that is being paid these days. however, in comparison to other players in the league, they deserve to get as much. (just a personal peeve of mine, like a-rod getting $26 mill for one fucking year to play baseball. i know that's how it is today, so don't yell at me to keep up w/ the times or nuttin.). oh, and francine, why don't you go back and wait for the geriatric's to blow another season down the drain ;) [email protected] I'm off to Franklin Pierce College in September. O&A Board Regular Registered: Mar. 01 | Milbury and the Islanders had to sign him, whatever they needed to do. Yashin is worth 10 years/$90 milion. Good thing he didn't come to the Devils, the best offer would have been 3 years/$4 million. God i love Louie Lam, best GM ever. What should i do I don't want to be sad anymore All i want is you.

O&A Board Regular Registered: Dec. 00 | Umm dick, it means out of the Top 20 players in the NHL, he would BARELY Make it, Like #19 or something. Which means he shouldnt be making the Most Money in the NHL. But you guys can love it all you want, but now are you going to be expecting the guy to be putting up Monster Numbers, or just very good numbers? And yeah Ziggy I cant wait to watch another shitty season of New York Rangers hockey. There will be very few smiles on my face, but one of those smiles will come when looking at the Final Standings and seeing the Rangers in 4th and the Islanders in 5th.

O&A Board Regular Registered: Dec. 00 | Alexei Yashin, Michael Pecca, and who else???? Mariusz Czerkawski? Robert Parrish? Oleg Kvasha? Garth Snow and 19 year old DiPietro in Goal. Please. Its the same stuff with Islander fans every year. Last year when you got Hamrlik you were supposed to make a playoff run and you got worse. Just because the Penguins lost Jagr, they still have Lemieux, Kovalev, Straka, and are better than both the Rangers and Islanders still.

O&A Board Regular Registered: Aug. 00 | and adrian aucoin, hamrlik, eric cairns, kenny jonsson hopefully soon, brad isbister, jason blake (ranger killer). last year sucked so much because half the god damn team got hurt in the first month, and it just went downhill from there. oh, and in the net this year i'm thinking stephen valiquette. he's better than dipietro, might even contend w/ snow for the starting job. in fact, the isles called him up last year, but the nite he got the news someone stepped on his foot w/ a skate on, and that ended the year for him. if they're healthy this year, they're making the playoffs. also i can't wait for trottier day - bout fucking time! go #19 [email protected] I'm off to Franklin Pierce College in September. O&A Board Regular Registered: Dec. 00 | The Only way the Islanders will make the playoffs is if they expand it to 12 teams per conference. And that would be good, because then maybe the Rangers would have a shot as well.

O&A Board Regular Registered: Oct. 00 | Islanders will make playoffs if some young players like Kvasha, Parrish, and DiPietro develop in next year or two into main players. After missing playoffs this coming year...they should be near playoff bound in year after. You can't deny the upgrade..but this team is still only on two wheels instead of 4. Since last year there was no wheels, it's a definate improvement. Sather would have pissed himself for Yashin. Peca too. AND FOR THOSE WHO DISCOUNT THESE UPGRADES: Don't be stupid...these guys are what they are for a reason. If someone's willing to pay, they are willing to play. And Islander ownership is willing to pay. Ranger fans can talk tough all they want...tough talk's cheap when they are are rebuilding. It's obvious they don't want Richter. their defense still sucks...but they got a good offense..how is that any diff from last year? And last year you missed playoffs. Ranger fans should be shaking in their boots, b/c finally they've been out-worked in the off-season paying for some stupid moves in recent years. If the Rangers don't fall behind the Isles this year...you can be assured it's gonna be the next. Until Blackburn, Brendl and Lundmark develop (which is at least 3-4 years), they are on the downslide.

O&A Board Regular Registered: Dec. 00 | Everybody knows the Rangers are on the downslide. Thats not hard to figure out. Not getting Jagr was idiotic and they are going to pay for it by missing the playoffs AGAIN!! But guess what other team will be missing the playoffs with them??? Thats right 8 years in a row for the Icelanders!
