O&A Board Regular Registered: Oct. 00 | Maddux stands tall among control pitchers -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Associated Press ATLANTA -- Greg Maddux set the NL record for consecutive innings without allowing a walk Tuesday night, passing the mark of 68 held by Christy Mathewson and Randy Jones. Maddux entered the game with 64 1/3 innings without a walk for Atlanta. He wasn't at his sharpest Tuesday against Houston, but went through the first four innings without issuing a walk. He passed the record set by Mathewson in 1913 for the New York Giants and matched by Jones for San Diego in 1976. Bill Fischer has the major league record with 84 1/3 consecutive innings, set in 1962 for the Kansas City Athletics. The record-breaking inning was costly for Maddux, though. Staked to a 3-1 lead, Maddux fell behind 5-3 after giving up RBI singles to Richard Hidalgo and Craig Biggio and a two-run double to Vinny Castilla. He then got hit by a pitch from Dave Mlicki in the bottom half. SIG PIC CREATED BY Jolene78 E-Mail Me METS will go ALL THE WAY THIS YEAR !!!!!!!!!!! O&A Board Regular Registered: Oct. 00 | this guy is a definite HOF'er. This is definitely a record that could stand for a while, especially with the pitching in the league now (A.J Burnett's 9 walk no hitter) Maddux is da man, even though he is a Brave.

Psychopath Registered: Jul. 01 | As much as I hate to admit it, the guy is great. I used to hate all that "Clark Kent" bullshit that the media used to spew about him, but he has to be in a list of the top pitchers of this half century. Proud Graduate of the AFDude Academy

Psychopath Registered: Aug. 01 | as some of you might have heard already maddux's streak ended on an intentional walk. the numbers maddux is putting up is just unreal. ________________________________ Maddux went 289 hitters since his last walk to Florida's Charles Johnson on June 20, going to three balls on just 22 of them. This was the right-hander's 10th start since giving up that walk. After the third, Maddux had 20 walks in 174 1/3 innings for the season -- eight of them intentional. ------------------------------- thats 12 unintentional walks all year. some pitchers get that in 2 or 3 games. O&A Board Regular Registered: Dec. 00 | Especially in the 3rd Inning! I know the game comes before the any record. But it was the 3rd Inning and this is Greg Maddux. He can get anybody out and this is a very rare streak that he is going after. I dont think they should have done it.

Hanger-On Registered: Jan. 70 | Maddux is definately a HoFer. 14 straight 15+ wins seasons. The person closed to him has like 6 (I forget who). Now, if you put his top four years from '92 to '95, it compares with the best four year span of any pitcher to every play the game. Put up the numbers of anyone you want. Clemens, Koufax, Johnson, etc. Maddux's numbers are as good or better as anyone who's come before him. Of course, Pedro is better, and Pedro's four years span of 97 to 2001 is even better than Maddux's

O&A Board Regular Registered: Dec. 00 | I dont think anybody is disputing Maddux as a Hall of Famer. its a no brainer, you dont need to defend it, nobody is arguing against it.
