I see your point that you don't like it. but your argument of "I liked John Mayer better when he was called Dave Matthews." is similar to the "I liked Opie and Anthony when they were called Howard stern" argument.

ok, ok, fine. so that line sucked.
Its just that Mayer was a benefactor of the acoustic folky trend that DMB opened up, hence that line. The minute I heard Mayers voice, I thought to myself "you can thank DMB for your record contract"
Plus, I once played with a guy, Nick Ciadella, who tried to sound like DMB as well...and I ended up quitting that band because in the end, he ended up being a scumbag who couldn't be trusted (among other reasons).
I guess I'm a bit jaded.
