We were 10 and 12 and that was the last time he hit us for being bad until I was being a complete asshole to him in high school years he chased me down and slammed his fists into my temples nearly knocking me out. Needless to say I deserved it. And I turned out relatively fine.

We instituted the good ole wooden spoon. Used it a few times, now he stands down when I tell him to. Of course only when I'm holding the spoon. I guess that won't go over too well out in public.

Can't hide the belt of course, but it does make a loud jingling noise when he's trying to take it off as he storms up the stairs. That gives us fair warning to either run or brace ourselves (if theres no exit).

My mom was the enforcer at home. She hit with the belt or hand till my brothers and I grew taller than her. By the time we were in our teens her weapons of choice had changed. Wiffle ball bats, coat hangers(plastic) wooden spoons. Easier for her since she would hurt herself if she hit us with her hand....
