Truth be known, Saddam was not respected by anyone, merely feared.

Going back to the search for WMDs argument, it was generally acknowledged by the U.N. that he had them. It was felt by other Middle Eastern nations that he had them. And he made no definitive move to dispute the fact. Whether it was because he had them, and didn't want the U.N. to find and dismantle them, or-- and this is perhaps more likely-- he was bluffing only to keep Iran and Syria scared of him, is beside the point.

The mere threat of nuclear or biological warfare he constantly presented made it a necessity to eliminate him. No President could ever, in good conscience, gamble that a foreign leader may or may not choose to utilize such weapons against the U.S. or its allies.

How safe would you feel, in this post-9/11 world, had you learned five years from now that our President sat on information about Saddam's weapon capabilites and chose to do nothing about it? Five years from now, the way you might have learned such information is when Saddam finally decided he was prepared to use those weapons to further his own goals.

The Congressional report on the events of 9/11 just came out today, and even that report is saying that the intelligence agencies had info concerning all the terrorist movements, and the President was informed of these. But since no agency was willing to share its info with the others, no one put 2 and 2 together.

And we all know what was the end result.
