My uncle had it right, he would beat his wife religiously. Most times with good reason, sometimes just to keep her from doing something in the near future or just incase.

my mom cried when my aunt got married cause my uncle would beat my aunt way before then. he used to beat my aunt & the kids all the fucking time. my aunt & 3 cousins moved into my parents 2 bedroom apartment with the 2 kids they already had for a while to get away from him.
a few months ago, he came over (now about 69 years old) & started a fight with my dad (65 y/o). he attacked him cause my dad called him stupid or soemthing. so he tried to hit my dad over the head with a flower pot. it was quite amuzing. a neighbor had to break it up. i haven't spoken to my uncle since.
