Is this for real??? - JimmyBlueEyes - 05-29-2004 I couldn't believe my eyes when I read this... At age 11, Anthony Seblano has a fiery fastball that's a blessing and a curse. The Brooklyn sixth-grader, nicknamed The Rocket, was recently yanked off the mound and banned from pitching against the St. Athanasius Youth League team - all because he's too good. The 4-foot-9, 80-pound lefty is the ace of the Joe Torre Little League's traveling team. But when the squad traveled to Borough Park to play St. Athanasius last Friday, St. Athanasius officials had the pint-size hurler marched off the mound. "Most of the time I just throw strikes. I never walk anybody," Anthony said yesterday. "I really don't think this is fair, because my teammates depend on me." Anthony's mom, Linda Seblano, said she couldn't believe her ears when her son's coach told her about the ban. "I'm appalled by this," said Seblano, of Marine Park. "We've told our son that if you work hard, good things will happen. Now we have to tell him that all his hard work has gotten him banned." Anthony can still pitch in the Joe Torre in-house league and for his school, Good Shepherd Elementary School. But he can't pitch in the St. Athanasius league, said Tom Gambino, co-chairman of the St. Athanasius Youth Organization. "He [Anthony] blows away the competition, so he is what we consider an illegal player," said Gambino. Gambino noted Anthony has thrown a perfect game and two no-hitters against St. Athanasius players. "He is an overwhelmingly, powerful pitcher. It's a very unfair advantage," Gambino said. He said St. Athanasius is a church league that's not affiliated with Little League, and therefore is not bound by its rules. Gambino said St. Athanasius' rules allow it to ban dominating pitchers from outside teams. "He can come in here and hit 10 home runs a game. I don't care, as long he he doesn't pitch," Gambino said. The kid can't play cause he's too GOOD?????? Are you friggin kidding me??? He should be getting scouted by some teams for crying out loud. Nice way to teach a kid a lesson, hey pal, you're too good you can't play no more. You'd think he'd get picked all the time to play. Is this for real??? - 60FeetUnderWater - 05-29-2004 People who attend church irritate the piss out of me. Add this display of whining and poor sportsmanship to my list of reasons. Is this for real??? - Sloats - 05-29-2004 It's a private 'for fun' league... let them choose their own rules.... Is this for real??? - madmick - 05-29-2004 Hope that kid doesn't peak too early and ruin himself before Lord George can sign him. And FUCK YOU to those so called adults who banned him from playing. If they was smart they start getting his autograph on bats and balls now. Is this for real??? - EffinC - 05-29-2004 Does anyone else find it troubling that this kid plays in so many god damn leagues? I played little league as a kid, inbetween that and school and just goofing off as a regular kid.....who had time for anything else? Are today's kids being robbed of this goof off time? I certainly hope not. The mysteries of the universe are all hammered out with your buddies during such time. Parents pushing their kids to fill up all of their free time is disgusting. Just let the kid hang around with his friends from time to time without having to go to practice! Is this for real??? - RapeFantasizer - 05-29-2004 They're probably some dirt poor family who sees this kid as their ticket out of poverty. Is this for real??? - Rooner - 06-01-2004 Oh no, dont let him play, he'll make my child feel inadequate, there by scarring him for life and causing him to go on a killing spree as an adult. My parenting had nothing to do with it. Is this for real??? - Sloats - 06-01-2004 Rooner, I'm siding with Rape on this one. Is this for real??? - Rooner - 06-01-2004 Oh, me too, but that was from the other families. Is this for real??? - header - 06-01-2004 Does everyone get a trophy? Where were these parents when my brother and I were the only good players on the crappiest baseball team in New Jersey? We lost games by 20 runs. It was horrible. The only game we almost won was called for darkness after we rallied with ten runs in the top of the fourth. So the home team took the win. It ruined my ability to live a normal life! AAAAHHHHhhhh bad memories. Ridicule. Tragedy. What will I do!!?!? |
