My mp3s are behaving badly - SeeYouNextTuesday - 07-23-2003

Ok, guys... weirdest shit ever. Years, no problems with my mp3s... some months back, the player randomly gets to Yellow Submarine... and after about 45 seconds, it hits me,... "Hey, THERES NO WORDS!" I remember this song having words! I click around to test some other songs... they all work, then I notice that Eleanor Rigby is also playing weird. The opening "Aaaah, look at all the lonely people" lines are fine, then "Eleanor Ri--" drops off to nothing, then its just music until we get to the chorus again. WEIRD.

I found about a month ago that everything was back to normal, and then today, again its screwy. If I turn up the volume really high I can still kinda make out the words at a whisper... more weird. No other songs are affected,... I tried converting them to wav's just to see what happened, and no change. HOW is this possible? And moreover, what can I do? Anyone have this happen? A virus that attacks Beatles songs? :Confusedhrug:: (Sorry about double posting if anyone reads CDIH)

Maybe Lennon is trying to tell you something.

What player are you using for your MP3s? And have you tried playing the weird MP3s through a different player?

Also, just for a lark, if you're using a flavor of Windows, what happens if you highlight and play the MP3 through Windows Explorer? (If you don't know how to do that, just single-click on the file itself, and a small version of Media Player should pop up under the description area on the lefthand side of the screen).

Oh nuts... I feel like a dick now. Lemme first say that other players did the same... now lemme say that I decided to follow some old fashioned circuit debugging theory and put a pair of headphones in the jack... i got lyrics... then i noticed I'm only hearing words on one side. Biggity bam... I unplug the headphones, reach out back and jiggle the wire, actually more like shove it hard in... and speakers start producing words. Hmmph... I must surmise that the loose inputs at the back of my subwoofer somehow made it so that I was getting a fake stereo, where I was getting the left signal out of both speakers. And somehow, those mp3s had the vocals on one side... doh! To think that all this time I wasn't even considering a hardware issue... :disappointed:

Thanks for the suggestions, though, Brain.
