Metallicas record sales #'s decline.

OK my 2 cents, I am a Metallica fan. Have been since Master of Puppets, favorite album, Ride The Lightning. I didn't like Load. Except for one or two tunes.ReLoad, was OK one or two songs really kick. Better than you, Fuel, Bad Seed, Prince Charming. S n M this was a bad move. I listened to certain tunes on St Anger and compared it to KISS' Music from the Elder (1981) It's an ok album but not a great album by that band. Hetfield said it on Behind the Music that they have Carte Blanche and can do whatever they want. They tried something different and it didn't work. I have no objection to evolution as 460 has been saying, but when you evolve to a point where you are alienating your most dedicated fans in the attempt to get more fans, it's not a good thing. Lars explained the whole napster thing and I actually thought he made a good point. Not that I agreed but he made a valid point. Metallica Live is great they put on a hell of a show, one of the best bands I have seen live. Maiden, once again, they evolve, but they also know what sells for them. They also put on a friggin awesome show. Another thing is they need to put out albums a little more frequently. Five years between the Black Album and Load?? Nearly six between Reload and St Anger?? WTF?? Back in the day certain bands, KISS put out 2 albums a YEAR!!! OK I am done.

During Summer Sanitarium, when they played mostly their old shit... man, nothing better than starting off a show with Battery... n-o-t-h-i-n-g.......

That show made the Load years and the Napster shit just melt away, and you remember why you loved to rock to their shit...

JimmyBlue, I think you hit it right on the head. I agree that bands to have to change,somewhat,to keep sounding fresh.Its just that when you hear the stuff they put out now compared to songs like "Creeping Death" and
"Master of Puppets", it kinda makes you wonder ....why?
Look at Slayer,they have changed but not to the point where their fans are saying.."What the hell happened"?
It seems like Metallica just turned their backs on their diehard fans. I mean think about it,the "No Life Till Leather" demo got passed around from person to person so much,they got signed to a deal without any airplay.Thats what I would call,"file sharing"long before there was Napster .They even used to have a section at their shows just for people who wanted to bootleg the show. Now they need to get paid for every little thing that involves them or their music. Its just sad to see a band who spoke out so openly and often about how they were all about their fans and that they were into playing music for the music (and the girls)
do a complete about face when money gets put in front of them.

Unicron, I was at Summer Sanitarium too, it ws my first time ever being "on the floor" of a Giants Stadium show; Robert Trujillo (sp? too early....) was literally 10-12 ft directly in front of me.

God damn did they kick ass that night....starting with Battery and directly into Master of Puppets (the FULL version...so many times I'd hear the edited version where they would skip the entire bridge, the acoustic/solo part....I can still hear the whole crowd sing along with Kirk when I think back on that night)

To me, Metallica is still a band that will do whatever they want and I'm still grateful that they are still around. Especially after seeing them live that night; they are still one of the greatest bands in all of the world.

and THIS is why people still go to see them - not because of St. Anger or any other piece of shit CD they've put out since they started collaborating with Bob Rock.

Try and defend this latest CD all you want, the music blows and everyone knows it. I've been a Metallica fan since Kill 'Em All (my copy was a copy of a record that was given out at a show when they self-promoted themselves), and Lars' drumming back then was highly influential on my instruction back then. They simply don't have it anymore. Sure, they can rock out live, but their new material is awful.

And why does finding what theyre putting out make me or anyone else less of a fan, or stuck in the past? WHAT THEY USED TO WRITE KICKED ASS - WHAT THEY WRITE NOW DOES NOT. It's not about being stuck in the 80's because as was mentioned in this thread (and I mentioned in another thread elsewhere), Maiden has managed to keep putting out solid CD's despite going through some lineup changes (though the Balze stuff is really awful, but you can't blame them considering he wasn't much to work with).

The point is, they're MTV Icons - that in and of itself is awful. This is a band who prided themselves on not being sellouts to the industry, prided themselves on being true to the fans, and true to their music. Now, they're the complete opposite.

Pop in a copy of Cliff em All and then come talk to me about how they're still the same fellas - they became that which they used to despise. Cliff is probaly rolling in his grave 24/7.
