Believe me, had Pettitte been pitching in Houston the past nine years, and just became a free agent, Steinbrenner would have wined and dined him and whispered sweet nothings in his ear. The Boss always covets someone else's players more than his own, and the Yanks' farm system really has just become trade bait.

Think about it. We refer all the time to the "core" of the team: Jeter, Williams, Rivera, Pettitte, and Posada. But that was 1996 (and Posada became the full-time catcher in 1997). There hasn't been another kid from the Yanks' minor-league club to come up and win a full-time position yet. Nick Johnson would have done it, except Steinbrenner coveted Giambi to replace Tino Martinez.

I don't fault the "win now" mentality. Baseball is a business, and success on the field is only true success if yours is the last team standing. What I <i>do</i> fault is the way he treats his own. These guys are all playing for the same goal, to help the team win. Let them do their jobs, for crying out loud, without always having to look over their shoulders for the next fly-by night acquisition to take their place.
