You definitely did the right thing by getting the cops involved. Fuck the "boys will be boys" mentality. It's one thing to fuck around, it's a completely different thing to threaten to kill someone. Sure, people will say they were just kidding. Tell that to the parents of the Columbine kids.

I love the fact that one of those punks was near tears. Oh, he's such a big tough guy when he's got backup and chasing a lone person, but as soon as he is caught and knows he's fucked he becomes a crying bitch. I love it! Big Grin

Whatever you do, do not let anyone talk you out of going through with pressing charges or filing a complaint. Do not think for one second these punks will have "learned a lesson" just because they got caught. Next time your son may not be as lucky.
