Speaking to the mom sounds like a good step. Find out if the kid seems remorseful for his actions (or at the very least he knows not to mess with your son again). Tell her you're considering dropping the charges, feeling that her kid has gotten the message about consequences. And, if need be, remind her that a similar incident down the road <b>will</b> result in charges being filed, with no chance for consideration.
