I work for FDNY as a fire alarm dispatcher, roughly translated, I tell the firemen where to go. I assist in maintenance of the circuits for the alarm boxes, act as a liason between FDNY and other city agencies, make sure the boro I work in has adequate protection, fill out reports on suspicious fires, and the most funnest part of of all, put up with regular abuse over the phone and thru the alarm boxes from punk kids and ignorant adults alike. They always like to tell you various parts of their anatomy are on fire(kids), and the ladies always like to tell you about a problem they have and then tell you how that they have kids. We have good hours and good time off, however if you want to take a specific day off, the only way to do it is either to swap out with someone or call in sick. Anyone interested, the test comes out next year.
