Why are you taking theoretical questions as personal comments about your lives? You're both intelligent people capable of operating a computer and creative. Sure Rooner might be an outlyer to the death spiral that is poverty in US. His brethren had the strength, will, and intelligence to spring out of it.
As for daycare, yes it is necessary for some couples to work two jobs. I just think that if two jobs are not a necessity, that couples revisit their value paradigm are think about what is more valuable: To me, everything I do is so that my children will have a better life, so that my children will climb up one more rung on the social ladder. I will thereby sacrifice my career, a bigger house/car, social status, neighborhood to ensure that my children will grow up what I believe is properly. Between myself and my wife, we will not have to work 2 jobs. And my wife has already fought and won that she will be the one to stay home. Maybe she will take up a job again when all of the kids are in school. maybe not.

Boy the way Glen Miller played,
songs that made the hit parade,
guys like us we had it made,
those were the days,
and you know where you were then,
girls were girls and men were men,
mister we could use a man like Herbert Hoover again,
didn't need no welfare states
everybody pulled his weight,
gee our old Lasalle ran great,
those were the days!
