I don't know if any of you folks know anything about John Constantine, but he's the exact opposite of what Keanu's showing in this trailer.

What an asshole. I hope this movie tanks. Constantine is one of my favorite characters, and this just turns him into a cheap American ripoff. I wouldn't be suprised to see the Brits calling this one out, and I'll agree wholeheartedly. Fuckers.

Not to defend the incredible thespian known as Keanu Reeves or anything, but wouldn't the blame be more on the director, telling him how to play the part?

Anyway, I don't know this story or this comic, but the trailer looked pretty cool.

I don't place the blame solely on Keanu, but I bet he used his Matrix driven star power to secure the part - he is a huge comics fan. But I can't understand why they let him get away with playing Constantine as Neo. It's friggin' awful. The director, the creative consultan (for fuck's sake Neil, why?), the casting director, fuck even the goddamn grip needs a maiming for this shit.

If you've ever the chance, read Dangerous Habits, and you'll get a fine idea of who Constantine is. I don't think there's ANYONE who could read Hellblazer and honestly say, "Oh Keanu Reeves is PERFECT for this role!" It's like saying Jerry Garcia should've played Superman. Apples and oranges, Marlboros and Silk Cuts.

Actually, when the creator of the comic thought it up, he had crafted it based on Sting. So, to tell you the truth, Keenu is about as manly.

Depp probably refused. He only does big blockbusters every so often...and with Finding Neverland, Pirates 2, then Rum Diary (directed by Benicio Del Toro) and with Charlie and the Chocolate Factory filming right now....he's been locked up for a good year now.

Originally, Tarsem Singh was attached to direct with Nicolas Cage to star. However, the director said that "With Cage, I can not make the film I had wanted to". Soon after Singh left the picture, Cage did as well.

Alan Moore created the character of John Constantine for his revamping of the "Swamp Thing" title in the 1980s. Constantine was then spun off into his own series, Hellblazer (written by Garth Ennis). Moore was set to receive payment for the optioning of his character for a movie version. And up to this point, Moore had distanced himself from productions of his works while still allowing his name to be used and to collect the checks, as with From Hell (2001) and League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, The (2003). He rarely commented on the film versions, always falling back on the fact that the comics were his and the movies weren't. In early 2004, Moore read the screenplay for this movie and proceded to demand that his name be removed from the movie and willingly forfeited all money he was due to receive for its production.

Well that's good.

Oh and just so you know, it was Jaime Delano that started the Hellblazer series - Ennis took over around issue 45 I think, and continued through issue 83. I've read a few of the Delano issues - they're not bad, but IMHO they can't hold a candle to Ennis' brilliance. Between the dialogue and plotting, along with Steve Dillion's interior art and Glenn Fabry's stunning covers, that run of Hellblazer remains one of my all time favorites in comicdom.
