i caught it last night. it's a great show. totally made up for that piece of shit six feet under episode i saw last night. it is like the job, only better because he can get away with a little more leary now. he's the same person, but it totally fits here. i really liked it. i set my dvr to record it for the whole season. the previews for upcoming episodes just made me say "wow".

i hope this one lasts.

Denis Leary is one of my favorite actors/comedians, and when I found out about this show, I was dying to see it. Jimmy had it taped last night. Hopefully it will be a weekly basis if he stops by my house after work to drop the tape off.

I never understood this. I have Cablevision in NJ and I have FX. You would think that the company would have the same channels everywhere.

Then again Cablevision is owned by that moron Charles Dolan.

Yeah, one would think so...even in LI they have the FX channel. And they run on the same channels as Brooklyn! But nope. I'd so much rather have direct tv than this bullshit cable service that freezes up when it feels like it. :mad:

Not only that- 3 years into "The Shield" and I have yet to see an episode. (Not buying the seasons!)

OK I thought it was done very well and I saw a few flashes of either people I knew or people I had heard about. Some of the things that you saw, like the chief watching the game in an apartment above the fire floor, or going into the bar with the dead dog, may have happened years ago, but would probably not happen today. There were a few technical glitches, but hey, it's the pilot. The firehouse looks like it's up in Harlem.

It's funny, I spoke to a few firemen today to get their reactions and they thought the show was ridiculous and painted them in a very negative light. God forbid, it should show that there are a lot of guys out there who have problems. What they don't understand is that most of the problems you have in the firehouses tend to stay inside those big red doors, they don't get shown out in the open unless it creates a serious problem, or someone gets hurt. The ones I spoke to would probably be singing a different tune if they were in the cast. It's Hollywood.

There were a few things they could have left out. Like Leary taking a hit off the flask as he goes up to do his Entry and Search into the fire apartment, not necessary. They didn't have the real alarm noise in the firehouse, it's a two tone alert followed by a male voice saying, ENGINE, LADDER, BATTALION, or STAND BY FOR THE FOLLOWING MESSAGE. Like a said a few little glitches but all in all I liked it. The ghosts bugged me a bit because I thought it was a bit over the top.

Actually Brain, I didn't cry, I laughed at a lot of stuff, and I shed my tears over the fallen,both friends and guys I did not know, a long time ago. It's time to move on, but it never really goes away, and I've had the nightmares to prove it.

Well, I think the whole point is that Leary's character is quite literally haunted by the people he's unable to save. As to the question of just how much the ghosts are real, and how much is just his mind playing tricks on him... that's what they're getting into; his psyche, how the life of a firefighter isn't all fame and glory, and how it can wear the shit out of even the most mentally strong.

It's well understood that they'll take liberties; otherwise it's a documentary. But at the very least, Leary made the character very 3-dimensional. He could have just as easily gone into a caricature route, where his guy just masks everything behind jokes. There are a lot-- and I mean a <i>lot</i>-- of nuances lying just beneath the surface, and I think as the show goes on, each one will be pulled out for us to see.

I'm a firefighter in my town, and have been for a few years now. Granted, It's not a career gig but It's no different in the end. I've got all the same pretty pieces of paper and I actually belong to a very progressive company.


Hitting the flask was't neccessary? The amount of career firefighters found to be abusing alcohol and or CDS while on duty within the past year is mindblowing. I'm sure there are just as many volunteers too, but the fact is it hasn't been reported on in such depth. It's a problem that affects teachers, lawyers, doctors, septic tank cleaners, and yes.....firemen. Bravo to Leary for actually having the balls to have such a social demon in the character.

You're 100% right when you say that the firehouse issues stay in the firehouse. Due to their unwillingness or inability to open that world to others, it's no suprise that there will be a few things a TV show will get wrong. Whether it be dialogue or sheer lack of research. doesn't matter,,,,,the show did alright in developing characters and setting plot lines. It's not a documentary on firemanics, it's a show on cable...

The ghosts are one of the more accurate things in my opinion. Not to the extent of having conversations, but I constantly see the faces of people I've seen killed in car accidents, suicides, and a 2 1/2 month old baby that drowned in the bathtub....while on duty for the PD I did CPR on her for 14 minutes and she still died. Let me just discard what that feels like......I've never had those people appear before me like a spirit or anything but I'll suddenly get a mental picture that sends a chill down my spine.

Leary's character is embellished.....and obviously so. I don't think that it sheds a negative light on firefighters because the show actually supports the notion that the world keeps zooming on and there he is with his whole life screwed up. He could be a stockbroker and have the same issues.

This post ranted a bit, and it's not a flame....by any means. I'm just sort of rambling on about how my opinion of the show measures up to others.

It is actually in Queens. A couple of friends of mine were watching them film a little while back.
