I would think once he started trying to kill her, she'd wake up. Unless, of course, she's a really deep sleeper.

I dunno. Let's assume he was going to slit her throat. She's sleeping, feels the tip of the knife touch her and wakes up. He's nervous about killing his wife, so I'm sure he's not handling it like a seasoned killler (one quick stroke). I could see it.

Why wouldn't he have just jammed the knife in her chest? He didn't think this through. He is a lot bigger than her I'm sure he could've smuthered her with a pillow with no problem. Or blood for that matter.
