Stephen King's Kingdom Hospital
#1
Did anyone check out this new Stephen King series tonight? I have been looking forward to this ever since I heard about it months ago because I love King's works, but I have to say this one is a bit strange.

Basically the premise of the show is a hospital was built upon the site of a mill fire that killed many child laborers back in 1869. Of course we know from Poltergeist (house built on a cemetary) that's doing such a thing is a no-no and thus the hospital is haunted.

Anyway, that's all standard horror stuff so that's normal, but then you have this freaky security guard with coke bottle glasses, two retarded people that seem to know things that are happening without actually seeing it and animals (including an aardvark) that can communicate telepathically. Very weird stuff.

I doubt this series will last due to the strangeness factor (ala Push, Nevada), but now I'm hooked, especially after seeing the upcoming previews. The first 2 hours were kinda slow moving to set up the show, but it looks like it may pick up from here and get good.

I watched the first hour and taped the second. I was too tired to finish watching. Don't tell me what happens. I didn't hear anything at all about the show until BJ told me yesterday. Now that he's knows it's a 13-part series, he's wishing he had kept his mouth shut. I guess he assumed it was going to be a miniseries like "Storm of the Century".

Anyway, I read anything he puts out (except Dark Tower, because I read one and didn't like it), but don't usually like his movies.

Is this supposed to be based on his accident and what went through his head? And then embellished in a King-like fashion?

We noticed the opening credits said Stephen Kings "Kingdom Hospital" based on a novel by {someone else}.

I do believe that's what he was going for. Not sure if that part was in the original, but from what I've read the whole accident was supposed to be representative of King's own accident.

Yes, it was originally written by a man named Lars von Triers. I never heard of this story before now so I don't know how closely Stephen King has followed it.
I am sure of one thing. I bet the characters Jesse James and Johnny B. Goode most likely weren't in the original. That was kinda lame and added even more to the strangeness factor.

Still, I hope ABC gives this a chance and doesn't cancel it midway through like they did with Push, Nevada. Now that I'm hooked, I want to see where this series goes.

I watched the 2nd half tonight. Definitely more interesting than the first hour. I'll watch (or tape) next week.

One thing I thought of last night...if it was supposed to show how his accident was (and from what I read at the time, it seemed pretty accurate), I wonder how the guy who hit him feels about the series. I wonder if they had to pay him off?

That would be funny.

Was it the angle in the supply room or is Ed Begley Jr like 4' taller than Andrew McCarthy?
